MINI launches the latest generation of MINI John Cooper Works

6:58 PM 0

It does not look as aggressively styled as the previous JCW versions in my opinion. Aside from the front bumper which is full of protrusions, grilles and openings, the new JCW Cooper S still looks like it sits too high off the ground especially when viewed from the side directly. This is like other MINI R56s series ( which I think is the main problem of the current R56 MINI's styling). I do think the original new MINI JCW Cooper S (the R53) looked the part and was better proportioned. And so was the R56 too.

Look at that chin.....

But it sure has more power though. 231hp and 320Nm from its turbocharged 1.6liter engine giving a 6.1seconds 0-100kmh time with 6 speed steptronic transmission. Why am I quoting the automatic instead of the manual tranny? Because the auto is 0.2 seconds faster and most Malaysians don't like shifting themselves. And they like specs. They buy cars on specs. As well as price. It must be cheap, branded and must come with everything that they never use most of the time. And it must be automatic 99% of the time. JCW or not.

New Large Mini Cars - 2015 Countryman and 2015 Paceman

10:12 PM 0

The New Large Mini cars are in. Let me type that again. LARGE MINI. Could there be an oxymoron that can beat that in the car industry? Maybe one could if they had a car called Ginormous and then is sized like a Perodua Viva. Anyway, Mini, the brand, has launched the all new Mini Countryman and Mini Paceman for 2015.

The Countryman is a four door Mini that is actually a compact (C segment) cross over SUV. This means that it is not small like the usual Minis we see. Anyway, this is actually a facelift of the current Countryman that has been around since 2010. It gets the usual - new LED lights, grille wheels and the usual other stuff that comes with a facelift. Oh, the 2015 Countryman is also Euro 6 compliant whereby the 1.6liter engines are tweaked to suit the new compliance. The Cooper S version gets 6hp more than before too - power is up to 190hp as well as being cleaner. Transmissions offered are the 6 speed manual and 6 speed automatic. This means that the countryside is going to thank the Countryman for supposedly polluting it less.

The Paceman was first launched in 2011 and it also getting a facelift. Basically these two large Mini cars are getting them. Same treatment - Euro 6 engines, new lights, grille, wheels and some other stuff. The Countryman is the 4 door compact crossover SUV. The Paceman is actually a 3 door compact crossover SUV. It is not an overgrown Mini Coupe but something like a full sized hatchback of stilts. Something like the Citroen DS3 in some ways but with less doors. It still differs from the Countryman in that the roofline slopes a tad bit and the waistline also slides upwards making a narrower glass area. All to make a chunky crossover look decidedly sporty. Or so they want us to believe.

Expect both models to be for sale in Malaysia within the next few months.

The paradox in car names..beginning with the latest all-new Large Mini

9:49 AM 0
My friend recently commented on my post regarding the All-new 2014-2015 Mini. He considers the large Mini an Oxymoron. I have to agree with him. Large Mini.

Now that the MINI is actually a brand name instead of actually meaning something small and petite unlike the original Austin Mini, it is the biggest automotive oxymoron around. To those that aren't aware of what 'oxymoron' means it is a figure of speech that juxtaposes contradictory elements. The MINI is definitely an oxymoron as it isn't truly small. We have cars like the Smart ForTwo and those Japanese Kei Cars which are much smaller than BMW's Mini.

People seem to accept paradoxes instead of straight forward monikers. Unless they're the Italians. They are quite straight to the point. We have the Maserati Four-Doors (Quattroporte) or the 1964 Ferrari 500 SuperFast (above) - which was really fast those days. Let's not forget the LaFerrari, or TheFerrari in English. Bloody straight to the point isn't it? Oh, the German Smart ForTwo is also a very straightforward name for a car as it only seats two people.

Some have really cheesy names like Nissan Leaf, to show its eco-green tendancies or the Honda That's. (below) What the heck is 'That's'? That's what? That's terribly awful?

I want manufacturers to be slightly more honest. Can I have the Nissan Almera sedan be called the Nissan Kim Kardashian as its rear end is huge as Kim's? Or the Nissan GT-R called the 'Nissan Turbokilla' after beating the heck out of the 911 Turbo in the hands of normal drivers. It makes perfect sense doesn't it?

2014 Nismo GT-R but it should be known as 'Turbokilla'

All-new Mk3 Mini is larger than ever. Why?

8:53 AM 0
Hot off the preview pages, the Mk3 2014/2015 Mini (above, left). Basically, its huge. 98mm longer (3,821mm), 44mm wider (1,727mm) and 7mm taller (1,414mm) than the Mk2 Mini. The wheelbase is 42mm longer at 2,495mm and it is wider too. Aside from that the top of the range Cooper S now comes with a 2.0liter turbocharged engine making 192hp. See? It even needs a larger sized engine to make it go fast.

Whilst the MINI name is actually a brand these days instead of the actual size of the cars, I am seriously thinking that the Mini needs a new name. It may have all the cues of the original Alec Issigonis Mini but this car is now much bigger. At the rate things are going, it may be Volkswagen Golf sized by the next generation. So much for having things small and nimble. It must be research groups, customer feedback and other what nots that have made this 2015 Mini what it is today. Why don't they just go out and buy a Golf instead if they actually wanted more space?
