Formula 1 needs more electrification according to Renault

6:05 AM 0

Renault claims that Formula 1 needs to be made more or more fully electric to escape in the future to stay behind in engine technology. Today's hybrid engines produce only 16% of their total electricity production through the energy recovery system, however, progress in this system is offered to significantly increase this number in the future.

Currently, Formula E has the reins as the only fully electric car in motorsports, but Renault's boss, Cyril Abiteboul, believes that it is the direction that F1 needs, and as it says:
If I look at the rate at which the world is changing, in my opinion, there is a huge risk that F1 should be left behind. The world is moving at a very fast pace and we must be very careful not to be left behind by the automobile industry. Look at the Greta Thunberg of this world, look at the electric cars. Whatever we believe about electromobility, it's not going to go away. Things people say today, they didn't even look at them six months ago. Ferrari was talking about an electric car!

Renault made similar pressures earlier, as it led to the impulse for hybrid V6 engines that were eventually introduced in 2014 and now looks ahead to the next era of engine regulations around 2026.

Formula 1 tests 18 inch wheel and tyre combo - Bye Bye 13 inch balloons?

3:16 AM 0
When I was avidly following Formula 1 (F1) in the early 2000s I always wondered why the heck they keep using 13inch wheels with balloon-like tyres especially when road tyre technology has evolved into rubber band thin tyres running at least 18 inches those days (these days cars run even larger sizes). Then we also had the DTM and BTCC which ran 18 inch wheels and tyres. Also slimmer than the donuts used in F1. But now, F1 together with official tyre supplier Pirelli has decided to test the use of 18inch wheels on the cars. If all goes well, we may soon see F1 cars having more realistic looking rubber bands instead of the donuts used nowadays.

Of course, the test, using a Lotus F1 car is just the beginning and logistically speaking such a change will cost a bomb. One reason why is that in the current F1 cars the balloon-like tyres act as part of the car's suspension,  the load bearing and even the aerodynamics too. We're looking at a major redesign of the F1 car's suspension dynamics for all the teams involved. If this were implemented, we're looking at added costs for the teams, more wind tunnel testing, more dynamic suspension testing and more.

But I suppose it is time for F1 to enter the 21st century when it comes to tyre design and whilst it may look slightly strange to see an open wheel race cars with rubber band tyres but imagine the research that road cars could benefit from F1 cars using similar shaped tyres. Oh, it also reminds me of an Ariel Atom road racer, the Atom 500 especially.

So it isn't so funny looking in some ways eh? Or we'll just get used to it.

At the Mercedes GP Petronas Meet The Fans Session - Pre-2011 Malaysian GP (UPDATED)

10:02 AM 0
The Meet the Fans session for the Mercedes GP Petronas team happened on the 6th of April. I happened to be at SURIA KLCC for the event. It started at 545pm and was quite interesting.

Nico Rosberg and Herr Schumacher....doing what F1 drivers do aside from drive. A lot of PR activity.

Schummi's Biggest Fan(atic).....It is a real tattoo, not a temporary paint job. Shocking.
The Mercedes GP F1 car.
The mighty Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG. First preview in South East Asia. We're lucky Petronas is sponsoring the Mercedes GP team as we get to see the latest mega Mercs before others do. We got to see the SLS AMG before most countries last year too. More pics and a detailed report would be posted soon over at CarThrottle.com and also over at MyAutoblog.org.

We Have A New Formula 1 Driver's Champion

7:44 AM 0

Sebastian Vettel. F1 World Chmpion. Who would have thought that would happen. After quite an impressive start and a lot of mistakes (like some shunts and funny overtaking moves) mid-season this junior driver seems to have gotten the best of double world champion Alonso who started this race 15points ahead of Vettel.

And that's all there is to know about this year's driver's championship.
