POST MORTEM: Why were there so little participants at the recent KL motor show 2013?

8:39 AM 0
It's quite simple actually.

1. The Tokyo Motor Show as well as the Los Angeles Motor Show 2013 took center stage over KLIMS 2013. This was because all three motor shows either overllapped slightly or were close to one another.

 2. When it comes to the Tokyo motor show, it is very important for the Japanese car makers to shine at their home turf. Tokyo is what some motor journos rate as a class A motor show. A class A motor show usually has the latest car launches as well as the unveiling of lots of concept cars.

3. The Los Angeles motor show is akin to a class B show. This means that it is important enough for manufacturers to launch new models there too. Note that in the case of the Los Angeles motor show Subaru found the North American market important enough to conduct the launch of the new Subaru WRX there.

4. The KLIMS'13 isn't prominent enough to attract due to our market (while large is too protected to make any impact). If it were, Honda would have decided to launch the new Honda City at KLIMS instead of launching it a few days after the closing in India. KLIMS is actually a grade C motorshow. Even the Bangkok and Jakarta motor shows have more fanfare.

5. Car makers would have to pick and choose motor shows if they overlap and if the market is large enough to spend. Bad for the organiser as they car just refuse to participate (which is what happened).

4. In Malaysia, there is a problem of two or three conglomerates holding the right to a few brands. You got Kia, Peugeot, Citroen, Chevrolet with one, Proton, Honda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Ferrari, Maserati and more with another as well as one more holding BMW, Ford, Hyundai. If their principals choose not to spend money on a stand at KLIMS'13 then the distributors would have to fork out. In this case, the principals mostly chose not to do so and that is why you see some car makers and you don't see some others.

6. This is the problem where only a few companies handle all the brands in a country. They will pick and choose if the manufacturer does not want to fork out display space at a motor show. Not good for a motor show and actually not very good for the industry as a whole.

7. Proton must have been suffering from a brain fart as regardless of whether you have nothing to show (this was a reason I was told by some industry players) or that they felt they needed to be given priority (like a diva needs her idiosyncrasies). Malaysia is Proton's largest market and regardless of whether you have anything to show or otherwise, Proton's presence ought to have happened. The average car buyer is the one Proton needs to reach out to and any chance of showing the brand should have been taken. There is actually no excuse for Proton to not participate at KLIMS'13. I mean Perodua was there and I was there observing the inquisitive general public asking questions on what's new with them. Big mistake Proton. It's no wonder you're continuing to suffer.

So it is actually various factors. Some truly unforeseen, some as clear as crystal. I do hope that the next KLIMS will not suffer from such circumstances like this one.

KLIMS'13 - Infiniti makes its debut appearance at the Motor Show

9:36 PM 0
Infiniti Q50

Infiniti has made their first appearance at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show. I hope they will keep on participating in it for years to come. Their cars might be for the luxury end of the car market, but variety makes things better. And people must have hopes and dreams.

They've displayed the luxury flagship Q70, the premium sports saloon Q50 (which has a larger 3.7liter engine compared to the 2.5liter Q70), the QX50 SUV and Sebastian Vettel's F1 car. Let's just see what Infiniti has to say - photos incorporated therein.

(-Sometimes, the press release is the most straightforward)
INFINITI FIRST APPEARANCE IN KUALA LUMPUR INTERNATIONAL MOTORSHOW 2013
  • INFINITI new nomenclature symbolizes new brand direction and the use of Q for sedans and coupes or QX badge for crossovers and SUVs – for clarity and cohesiveness as it embarks on ambitious growth plans, including significant expansion of the Infiniti portfolio
  • Infiniti Q50, the new premium sports sedan heralds a new design direction for the Infiniti range – is the first Infiniti to carry new Q badge

KUALA LUMPUR (11 November 2013)– Infiniti, a performance luxury vehicle brand from Japan is showcasing its model line-up for the first time in Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) from 15 to 24 November 2013.
Infiniti has built a reputation for producing premium vehicles with provocative design and world-leading technologies. Infiniti vehicles are renowned for their character and personality and obsessive attention to detail.
The Infiniti showcase in KLIMS displays premium vehiclesin a combination of precision design and engineering and exhilarating performance.
Underlining its performance credentials, Infiniti has formed an alliance with the Red Bull Racing Formula One team as Title Partner and Vehicle Performance Partner. The partnership is a two-way transfer of ideas and techniques.
Central to the relationship is the appointment of four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel as Infiniti’s Director of Performance. Vettel has played an active role in the development of the Infiniti Q50 premium sports sedan and will continue to influence the characteristics of Infiniti’s future model line-up.
Marking another significant step in its plan to further expand its presence in the premium automotive sector, Infiniti today announced details of a new nomenclature strategy to be applied to its complete product range beginning with the 2014 model year. The first model to carry Infiniti’s new badge will be the Q50, an all-new premium sports sedan unveiled at Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2013.
The premium automotive brand will see its model range simply prefixed either by Q – for sedans and coupes, or QX, for crossover and SUV models. Each model will be further identified by a double digit representing hierarchy within the range.
This strategic change reflects Infiniti’s desire for clarity and cohesiveness as it embarks on ambitious growth plans, including significant expansion of the Infiniti portfolio.
Showcased in the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2013 are the following vehicles:
Infiniti Q50

The Infiniti Q50, an all-new premium sports sedan, heralds a new design direction for the Infiniti range. Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2013 - KLIMS13 Initial report

8:20 PM 0
Not bad. There may be a lack of names like BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi and, gasp, Proton (who must be the biggest spoilsports in Malaysia at this moment), but there are some concept cars worth previewing.

Perodua has a sedan concept that is still a concept car that has no production ready cues whatsoever. I cannot tell as yet whether is is based on anything as I am just typing this out whilst waiting for the official tour which starts after lunch. It looks ugly especially with that stumpy boot. Not what I'd expected.
Perodua also displayed the interior and an outline of the exterior of the upcoming Perodua Viva replacement. Looks like a shruken Myvi. This is a good thing.

Aside from that, Honda's small mid engined coupe roundabout looks promising. Smaller than the CRZ it is Honda Beat in size and could be one to look out for if they produce it.

Stay tuned for more updates when I get home later tonight folks. Oh, do check out our Facebook page for updates. I sometimes update photos direct to Facebook. So do click the 'Like' button there folks.
