NAZA Italia launches the New Ferrari 488 GTB in Malaysia

5:54 AM 0
L to R - Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, Group Executive Chairman & Group CEO of NAZA World Group of Companies, Mr. Dieter Knechtel, Managing Director of Ferrari Far East,   Mr. Simon Inglefield, Head of Sales ASEAN, Ferrari Far East,  Mr. David Hector Ratnaike, Senior Vice President 2 of 4-Wheels Division, NAZA World Group of Companies

The Ferrari 488 GTB was launched to the media earlier today. The Malaysian launch actually comes just a few months after the international launch at the recent Geneva Motor Show. It actually goes to show that Malaysia is actually an important market for the Prancing Horse.

The 488, the replacement for the 458 Italia is the first of the new breed of turbocharged Ferrari (not the first - we had the 288 GTO and the F40 prior to this) that is in line with the latest emission controls and legislations that require downsizing when it comes to engine capacity. Anyway, downsizing here means a smaller 3.9liter V8 compared to the outgoing 458 Italia which had a 4.5liter normally aspirated V8 engine (562hp and 540Nm torque). It however makes the use of force induction which enables it to have 661hp and 730Nm of torque. These figures actually eclipse the magnificent limited run Enzo Ferrari from 2003 - 651hp and 661Nm torque.

That was what a Ferrari hypercar achieved back then. Look what slightly over a decade of development has achieved. The car in the flesh, well metal is a beauty. An evolution in terms of styling compared to the 458, but underneath, Ferrari have had a whole lot of work done on it. The engine and chassis tech are truly impressive as always.

Anyway, let's show some figures. It will cost over RM2.1 million by rough estimates (after taking into account the introductory base price of RM1,068,800.00 before options, duties and other taxes). Naza Italia, who are official importers of Ferrari here in Malaysia have mentioned that they have already twenty (20) bookings of the 488 GTB in hand which is about the Malaysian allocation for at least two years. They are also expecting a few more when potential customers view the car. There are those who will want to see what they are buying. This isn't that surprising with the number of Ferrari I see on the roads in and around Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur these days.

PRESS RELEASE AND SPECIFICATIONS

NAZA Italia debuts the New Ferrari 488 GTB

Kuala Lumpur, 16 June 2015 – NAZA Italia, official importer of the Ferrari brand in Malaysia, presented the Ferrari 488 GTB to the Malaysian market today, in a launch ceremony held at its newly-renovated NAZA Italia showroom. The Ferrari 488 GTB’s Malaysian debut comes just a few months after the model’s International Premiere in Geneva.

Present at the official launch ceremony were Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin (Group Executive Chairman & Group CEO of NAZA World Group of Companies), Mr. Dieter Knechtel (Managing Director of Ferrari Far East), Mr. David Hector Ratnaike (Senior Vice President 2 of 4-Wheels Division, NAZA World Group of Companies) and Mr Wan Ahmad (Vice President 1 of NAZA Italia Sdn Bhd).

“The Ferrari 488 GTB provides a breathtaking 661bhp – the highest specific power output of any road-going Ferrari. Exceptionally powerful with greater fuel economy, this model is bound to be a new Malaysian favourite,” said Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, Group Executive Chairman & Group CEO, NAZA World Group of Companies.

The twin-turbocharged V8 Ferrari 488 GTB sets a new benchmark for the sports car sector. Forty years from the launch of Ferrari’s iconic first-ever mid-rear-engined V8 berlinetta, the 308, the Ferrari 488 GTB opens a new chapter in the history of cars with this particular architecture.

“Available at the introductory base price excluding duty and options of RM 1,068,800.00 and with the interest it has sparked worldwide, we are confident that the Ferrari 488 GTB will turbocharge its way into the hearts of Malaysian Ferraristi,” stated Mr. David Hector Ratnaike, Senior Vice President 2 of 4-Wheels Division, NAZA World Group of Companies.

Credit for this achievement must go to the Ferrari 488 GTB’s revolutionary proprietary solutions which deliver a car at the top of its class in terms of power output (670 cv) with engine and command response times of just 0.8 and 0.06 seconds respectively. Significantly, however, sophisticated dynamic vehicle controls make this massive power completely controllable even on the limit by drivers of all abilities, resulting in the unique driving pleasure that only a Ferrari can deliver.

Ferrari drew extensively too on its experience in both Formula One and endurance racing, bringing to the road the technology that delivered victory in two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the title in the WEC (World Endurance Championship). Also pivotal was the XX programme in which Ferrari’s technicians have developed a unique knowledge of the dynamic behaviour of extreme cars driven by non-professional drivers.

The 488 in the car’s moniker indicates the engine’s unitary displacement, while the GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta, a reference to its deep roots in Ferrari history.

Designed by the Ferrari Style Centre, the Ferrari 488 GTB’s sculptural forms are completely new. They accentuate the car’s sportiness yet retain the classically clean, pure lines typical of Ferrari’s legendary styling. The seamless interweaving of form and function is clear in every detail, in fact. Certain design elements are also obvious nods to the past, not least the 308 GTB-inspired styling of the flanks.

The extreme power required by the car is delivered by the new 3902 cm3 turbo engine which is coupled with a seven-gear F1 dual-clutch gearbox featuring Variable Boost Management which optimally distributes torque (a maximum 760 Nm in seventh gear). The Ferrari 488 GTB guarantees exuberant performance that is absolutely exploitable to the fullest regardless of driving conditions and is accompanied by a deep, seductive soundtrack, the signature of all Ferrari engines.

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s revolutionary aerodynamics incorporate patented solutions, such as the blown rear spoiler, as well as innovative features like the 458 GT-derived aerodynamic underbody with vortex generators.  The result is a new efficiency record for a Ferrari (E=1.67). Downforce increases to 325 kg at 250 km/h, thanks in part to active aerodynamic devices which reduce drag whilst simultaneously generating downforce when required.

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s dynamic vehicle controls have also been further evolved. It sports a new version of the Side Slip Control System (SSC2) which, aside from just integrating with the car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, now also controls the active dampers. This renders the Ferrari 488 GTB’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable, so that less expert drivers can enjoy its potential to the fullest, resulting in an astonishingly engaging driving experience.

The Ferrari 488 GTB makes its debut in a new Rosso Corsa Met livery with black and red technical fabric cabin trim.

Ferrari previews the Ferrari 488 GTB ahead of its launch

6:40 PM 0
The Ferrari 488 GTB is about to be launched soon over at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Ferrari says it is not merely an upgraded Ferrari 458 Italia although those who aren't aware will say that it looks pretty much the same.

I suppose it isn't as the heart of this one now gets a 3.9liter bi-turbo V8 that pumps out 670hp and 780Nm torque. Compare this to the 562Hp and 540Nm torque from the 458 Italia and you know it that the 488 GTB is more supercar than before. It has a 7 speed dual clutch gearbox and claims a 0-100kmh time of 3.0 seconds and a 205mph+(330+kmh) top speed (458 Italia gets 0-100kmh done in 3.4seconds and tops out at 202mph if you must know). It also has better aerodynamics too. 50% more downforce than the Italia as well as improved vehicle dynamics from its onboard electronics too.

Turbocharging is now necessary with emissions control and average manufacturer fuel consumption figures being the forced upon targets. And this isn't the first new production Ferrari to get such an engine - the upgraded Ferrari California roadster if you remember. Of course, Ferrari's entry level supercar now goes turbo. More thrills for those who can afford it obviously.

Let's see when Naza Italia, local distributors for Ferrari and Maserati is going to bring in this baby. As we speak, the joint Ferrari Maserati showroom located along Federal Highway is still under renovation. It has already been more than a few months come to think of it.

PRESS RELEASE
Ferrari 488 GTB: extreme power for extreme driving thrills

Maranello, 3 February 2015
Forty years on from the unveiling of its first ever mid-rear-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the Prancing Horse opens a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history. The Ferrari 488 GTB provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers in everyday use. Its response times, nimbleness and on-the-limit driving guarantee a unique sense of exhilaration and unparalleled driving pleasure.
The new berlinetta brilliantly encapsulates Ferrari’s experience in both F1 and the WEC, where the 458 GT holds the World Championship title and has won its category in the last two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new model also exploits to the full the know-how gleaned by Ferrari technicians over the last decade through the XX programme which makes extreme track-only cars available to gentleman test-drivers. The data yielded has made a significant contribution to the refinement of the electronic and vehicle control systems so that drivers can make the most of the incredible performance of this new car.
Powertrain

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s new 3902 cc V8 turbo is at top of the class for power output, torque and response times, making it the new benchmark for this kind of architecture. The engine unleashes 670 hp at 8,000 rpm along with 760 Nm of maximum torque in seventh gear and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds at 2,000 rpm. These figures are sufficient to allow the 488 GTB to accelerate from 0-200 km/h in an astonishing 8.3 seconds and, when combined with the radical innovations introduced on all aspects of the car’s performance, lap the Fiorano track in just 1’23”.

The gearbox features Variable Torque Management which unleashes the engine’s massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle. As is always the case, engineers have dedicated great attention to perfecting the Ferrari 488 GTB’s sound, creating a new soundtrack that is full, clear and totally distinctive, as expected from any Prancing Horse engine
.

Aerodynamics
The car’s aerodynamics also made a pivotal contribution to performance: its 1.67 efficiency figure is a new record for a production Ferrari and is the fruit of 50 per cent more downforce than the previous model and reduced drag. The greatest challenge was achieving these two goals simultaneously. Several innovative elements were specifically developed to do so, not least a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and, at the rear, active aerodynamics coupled with a blown spoiler. The aerodynamic underbody, which incorporates vortex generators, is highly sophisticated, too.

Vehicle dynamics
The Ferrari 488 GTB’s subsystems and electronic controls make its power and performance instantly available and controllable. It is, in fact, the most responsive production model there is, with razor-sharp response times comparable to those of a track car.

The evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2 – SSC2), is more precise and less invasive, providing greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. Aside from integrating with car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, the SSC2 now also controls the active dampers which renders the car’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable.

Exterior design
Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new car features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody. The broad, low tail is also dominated by aerodynamic solutions, including an innovative blown spoiler which generates downforce without increasing drag. This works in conjunction with an aggressive ramp angle for the diffuser which features active flaps. The greater height required for the diffuser was achieved by repositioning the exhaust tailpipes. The circular LED tail lights have also been redesigned.

Interior design
In the cabin, the seamless integration of the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the sense that the cockpit is completely tailored around the driver. Usability was the key word in the design, leading to an extremely sporty ambience that in no way compromises on comfort. There are plenty of classic Ferrari styling elements too, such as the clear separation between the dashboard and tunnel, the multifunctional steering wheel, the control switch bridge and wraparound seats. The graphics and interface of the infotainment screen have also been completely redesigned while the design of the Ferrari 488 GTB’s new key takes its inspiration from the car’s cylinder banks and allows keyless starts.
The 488 GTB will make its world debut at the International Geneva Motor Show in March.
