THE TITANIUM STRONG BLACKOUT TRIAL

MAN AND MACHINE TAKE ON A CHALLENGE LIKE NO OTHER IN

A PITCH-BLACK RACE AGAINST THE LIGHTS

(5 June 2014) Witness jaw-dropping car stunts like never before in the first Castrol EDGE

Titanium Trial: Titanium Strong Blackout. YouTube sensation Ken Block, Augusto Farfus (BMW

Motorsport works driver/DTM), Mike Rockenfeller (Audi Sport works driver/DTM) and Adrian Zaugg

(Lamborghini Squadra Corse test driver) team up for the first time to take on this one-of-a-kind race

against the lights, on a course drenched in darkness. Powered by Castrol EDGE now boosted with

TITANIUM FST™, it was up to the drivers to step up, push it and be Titanium Strong.

Blackout features the world’s first state-of-the-art, pitch-black racetrack made out of hundreds of

beams of light. The course is designed to accommodate a four-car relay that tested the team’s

driving skill as they worked together for the first time. The track pushed the drivers and their vehicles

to the edge, testing the strength of man and machine to perform in sync like never before.

At each stage of the course the Blackout drivers were faced with a series of light obstacles – The

Laser Tunnel, Laser Drift, Slalom and Laser Box – as they pushed their cars to the limit, relying on

their ability to react, whilst racing against the lights. To make things even more challenging, Ken

performed a synchronised jump over Mike Rockenfeller’s Audi R8 V10, especially difficult given the

lack of a speedometer and RPM in his 2014 Ford Fiesta ST RX43, plus a wet track due to the rain.

After shooting the Trial Ken Block said: “Blackout was unlike anything I’ve done before. It was like

being inside an actual video game. The course would keep appearing and then disappearing as I

was driving and attempting to coordinate my segment with the other drivers. It definitely wasn’t an

easy challenge.”

Groundbreaking art, experience and technology specialists, Marshmallow Laser Feast, renowned

for their work with U2, Miley Cyrus, Sony and Nike, were recruited to create the spectacular light

obstacles. Partnered with award-winning production company LOGAN, who has worked with Ken

Block before, they together made the Titanium Strong Blackout a truly unique challenge, where

man and machine perform in sync while Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™ provides the

outstanding oil strength they demand.
