Spotted for sale: Mercedes Benz 190E Evolution II Replica - The price asked? A whopping RM50K

6:33 AM 0
You're not going to see this for sale very often. This is a replica of the 1990 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II. Asking price is an extremely high RM50,000 for something which is not an original. Simple tell-tales would be the fact that the original was only made in left-hand drive. The fact that there were only 502 made by Mercedes Benz means that if it were a real thing it would also cost in excess of USD$100,000 these days. I actually wrote about the original here some days back in fact.

So why do I think the chap is asking RM50,000 for his replica? It actually looks bloody nice in fact. But personally, after you do the math it does not reason out logically. Of course a standard 190e 2.0 car would cost you RM15,000 at the most. A 2.5-16 Cosworth engine could cost you RM15,000 with labour and new parts. The bodykit from Indonesia and paint at RM15,000 with all taxes. This leaves about RM5,000 for the interior and wheels. I suppose he is just trying to recoup his expenses. But RM50,000 for something that is just a very well done up replica is a little pricey.

But who knows. The car is stunning that much I can say. As much as I would love to have a 190E 2.5-16 Evo II I'd personally pay half the amount at the most. And that would be pushing it. As for the amount asked, I could get an original 2.5-16. It usually sells for RM35,000-45,000 these days here in Malaysia. Now that would give you proper bragging rights at the club. Yes?

Sunday Car Porn: Happy 25th Anniversary to the Mercedes Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II

12:35 AM 0

Last month marked the 25th anniversary of the totally mad and outrageous Mercedes Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II. This model, made during an era where manufacturers had to homologate or put into production what ever bits of souped up parts that they actually needed to use for racing in their road cars.

Mercedes Benz wanted to capture the German Touring Car (DTM title badly enough to come up with this - a winged monster based on their smallest chassis at the time, the 190E. It was put into limited run production of about 502 units. This was the minimum amount required for them to use such parts on their DTM race cars. The rear window 'spoiler' wasn't in fact a spoiler. It was there because regulations require that the rear bootlid spoiler must not be visible from the rear view mirrors. So instead of compromising aerodynamics, the mad engineers at Mercedes Benz (not AMG, this was the days when AMG was still an outside tuning house which were engaged by Mercedes Benz for their racing cars) decided to circumvent this ruling by covering up the top part of the rear windscreen with a cover making the wing invisible from inside the cabin. This was the original reason for that vision blocking piece of trim.

Basically, the bodykit was so outrageous that BMW had said that if it works, Mercedes' laws of aerodynamics must be different from ours. Of course they were wrong. Mercedes Benz actually managed to win the championship in 1992 after lots of hard work.

Now here in Malaysia there are no genuine 190E Evo IIs out there. In the 1990s there was one car that looked like an Evo II bearing the QKC plate here. It was the first known 190E with a replica bodykit complete with the Evo II wheels and all. I heard that the car is still around but it now lacks the massive rear wing. Aside from that, there are newly made others. Most of them have bodykits that come from Indonesia and some in fact have at least the Cosworth engined 2.3-16 inside it. One has that DTM styled dish wheels and looked bloody impressive. It simply tells me that many Mercedes fans out there also think that the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II is Mercedes Benz's finest looking sedan there is.

I think it is even madder than the W204 C63. Black series too. This folks, is the ultimate Mercedes Benz with wings. It also proves that Mercedes Benz are even madder than BMW or Audi.  Yes?

Happy anniversary. And here's to the good old days when touring cars looked like the cars we drive on the roads or vice versa.

PRESS RELEASE

25 years of the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II
The “Baby-Benz” as a super sports car

The 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II was an early highlight in the success story of exclusive sports saloons from Mercedes-Benz’s compact class. 25 years ago, this apogee of the W 201 model series thrilled professionals and the general public alike when it was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show. The touring car developed for Group A racing on the basis of this sports saloon went on to acquire legendary status. Mercedes-Benz took the first three places in the DTM championship in the 1992 season with this vehicle, which was referred to succinctly as the “Evo II”. Today, the Evo II presents a fascinating spectacle as a works racing car from Mercedes-Benz Classic competing in historic motor sport events.

Compact, powerful and muscular: the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II exuded self-assured sporting prowess at its premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1990 – and not without reason: the sports saloon provided the basis for the new Group A racing tourer with which Mercedes-Benz competed in the German Touring Car Masters. At the same time, the Evo II was also a particularly powerful protagonist in the strategic product initiative which the Stuttgart-based brand was rolling out at the time. 25 years ago, the sports saloon laid the foundations for the special tradition of high-performance vehicles such as are offered by Mercedes-AMG today – culminating in the C-Class in the current C 63 S of model series 205 rated at 375 kW (510 hp).

The Evo II did justice to its appearance by virtue of a further development of the 2.5-litre oversquare engine adopted from the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution, which had demonstrated excellent stability irrespective of rpm variations ever since its introduction in 1989. The engine’s output had been raised once again in comparison to the first Evolution model from the previous year, the Evo II now generating 173 kW (235 hp) of power as opposed to the previous 143 kW (195 hp). The top speed was 250 km/h, and the Evo II accelerated from a standing start to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds.

The body had also undergone further refinement on an aesthetic and technical level. The Evo II chassis, which had been modified for racing use, was fitted with 17-inch wheels (as opposed to 16-inch), for example. The vehicle’s aerodynamics were improved by new front and rear bumpers with integrated spoilers, wheel arch flaring integrated into the line of the body and the highly pronounced rear aerofoil.
In all, 502 units of the Evo II were produced - available exclusively in blue black metallic. At the time of its original presentation the Evo II was priced at DM 115,259.70, or DM 119,717.10 with air conditioning.
A departure from the doctrine of moderation and restraint

Mercedes-Benz presented the compact class W 201 in 1982 as a completely new, third main line in its passenger car range. The model series set new standards in efficiency, handling, safety, and design, while also lending the Stuttgart-based brand a younger and fresher image. The general public came to refer to the W 201 as the “190” or the “Baby-Benz”. Racing successes were to add magnificent sporty dynamism to the vehicle’s merits, although initially the Evo II was not associated with sporting prowess: the first entry-level models generated an output of 66 kW (90 hp, 190 model) and 90 kW (122 hp, 190 E model), while the 190 D diesel model launched in 1983 managed 53 kW (72 hp). 1984 saw the launch of the lively six-cylinder 190 E 2.3-16 (136 kW/185 hp), however. This vehicle marked a departure from the doctrine of moderation and restraint for the compact saloon.

The 190 E 2.3-16 put in a brilliant performance in the opening race of the new Nürburgring in 1984, which was won by the then largely unknown Brazilian Ayrton Senna. In 1988 Mercedes-Benz entered the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) with the racing tourer developed from the series production version, and Roland Asch finished the season as Vice-Champion. Meanwhile, the motor sport specialists in Stuttgart were already working on their next coup, developing the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution (1989) and 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II (1990) models on the basis of the road-going version of the sixteen-valve model. 502 of each model were built, in compliance with the requirements stipulated by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) regarding the homologation of Group A vehicles for the DTM.

Racing use and innovation go hand in hand. While the 245 kW (333 hp) 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution racing tourer was enjoying its initial success, work on the second development stage got underway in earnest in August 1989. The last of 502 Evo IIs was built in Bremen in May 1990. AMG then assumed responsibility for converting the vehicles destined for racing use. The 274kW (373hp) racing tourers now went into production with body components such as bonnet, boot lid and spoiler in extremely lightweight and robust plastic.
The Evo II had its racing debut on the North Loop of the Nürburgring in the DTM on 16 June 1990. In the final race of the series at the Hockenheimring on 15 October 1990, all the works-supported teams were provided with the new vehicle. In 1990 Kurt Thiim took 3rd place in the DTM, and in 1991 Klaus Ludwig was runner-up. In 1992 Ludwig won the DTM Championship ahead of Kurt Thiim and Bernd Schneider – all three driving a 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II. In the 1993 season, Roland Asch finished as runner-up in the successor to the Evo II, ahead of his team colleague Schneider.

In March 2015, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II celebrated its 25th birthday. To this day the young classic retains the fascinating allure that it first revealed when it was unveiled as a new compact sports saloon at the Geneva International Motor Show in 1990. This enduring appeal is particularly true of the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II configured by Mercedes-Benz Classic as a works racing car, which adds a special shine to historic motorsport in its appearances at Youngtimer Trophy meetings.

Sunday Car Porn: Gestation of the Mercedes 'Baby Benz' W201 190E in pics.

5:20 AM 0
Mercedes Benz took the end of the 1960s up till 1982 to finally come up with a Baby Benz, the Mercedes Benz 190E (W201 series). Being a very traditional brand who only built high end cars, it took its sweet time in coming up with an 'entry level' car. And that wasn't what really happened too.

Since Mercedes Benz never built a small car in a long, long while, the 190E was over-engineered and was still priced at a premium compared to a similar sized Ford Escort or even a slightly larger Mazda 626 of its day. It had the same 'thunk' when you closed the doors. It brought along the first production multi-link suspension in a road going car as well as many features that you now see in cars today. It was so good that it stayed in production till 1993 with over 1.8million units built.

Take a look at the photos below of drawings and of prototypes to see how Mercedes Benz started out, especially the middle part where they cut a W114/115 and made it shorter and narrower. Quite unique.

Compare this with the full sized w114/5 below

I think it was wise for Mercedes Benz to actually wait till the 1980s before the 'Baby Benz' came out. Don't you guys agree too?

The 190e gets a new paintjob.

7:51 PM 0

The Mercedes Benz 190e has gotten a new coat of paint since we last saw it here. It now sports a new front bumper too like the original 2.3-16 Cossie. The colour is now something called Smoke Silver and is the one of two original colours for the Cossie. The lights are all new too. Yes, this normal 8valve 2.3 looks like a brand new Mercedes Benz. Fabulous isn't it?

Updates to the site and we welcome the Mercedes 190e 2.3 8v as part of our fleet.

6:16 AM 0

If you noticed we've now put an 'Our Cars' link as well as a link to our Facebook site so that you may interact with us on that social network.

The interesting thing is that genuine petrolhead and motoring enthusiast Adlis K who now owns the modern classic Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3 8v with the Cossie bodykit and 190e EVO2 wheels has decided to join forces and become a contributor.

We will be featuring parts of the car's refurbishment under his hands in the coming months. Or Years. It all depends on how long he decides to keep the car. This fella is a serial car buyer, and with that comes serial car seller. So you never know. But do stay tuned folks. Things are picking up in here.

Also to come are reviews of the Suzy Alto 1.0, a few longer writeups that we have planned and other stuff. We can't exactly say as we like doing things at the spur of the moment. It makes life interesting doesn't it?

And here's a mega 'up yours' to older cars being unsafe - A 1987 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3 8v

8:08 PM 0

I just drove this car a few days and God, it was comfortable and surprisingly nimble. It also felt as solid or even better than newer cars costing RM80,000. The car in question is a 1987 190e 2.3 8valve with a 2.3-16 bodykit with a front AMG bumper. The wheels are original 8.75in x 17 Mercedes Evo 2 wheels plucked from the utterly mad 190e 2.5-16 Evo 2. It makes 134hp and 205Nm in stock form.

This car  was just purchased by serial car buyer and car enthusiast Adlis K. Those that follow this site would remember him as the owner of the pretty fabulous W124 Mercedes 200E equipped with a 500e bodykit.

Upon taking the steering wheel from Adlis K and driving the 190e 2.3 I first noticed that the ride is sublime even with its slightly modded suspension setup. It rides on a lowered spring mounts coupled with 17 inch EVO 2 wheels on 215/45/17 tyres. You notice that it soaks up uneven road surfaces with ease It is slightly firmer than a W124 of the same era but you can throw the 190e into corners with more abandon if you wanted to. I suppose this is because of its size as both share a similar front and rear suspension setup. In fact the rear multi-link suspension was first used in this W201 190e before being adopted in the W124.  How good you say the ride is? It is even better than a current model w204 c-class (I should know as I own one).

The 2.3liter 8 valve was the base engine on which the legendary 16 valve variant was built on. That car had the same bottom-end (pistons, conrods and block) but a totally new Cosworth designed head. Adlis K was actually on the hunt for one but it never seems to be on sale locally. There was one a few weeks ago but that was snapped up even faster than one could say "Mercedes Benz 2.3-16". People are jumping at these old Mercedes'!

Anyway, this 190e 2.3 is not a slouch. It may not be lighting fast in its acceleration (0-100km in about 10secs when new and 200km/h max speed) but the torque makes it a better drive than any 2.0liter Mercedes of the same era. The four speed automatic is a good match for the car's demeanor and shifts quite smoothly. Kickdown on the automatic is pretty good too. If you drive this car fast round a bend it surprisingly grips with the usual tinge of Mercedes understeer before going neutral mid corner. Not enough power to throw out its tail in the dry however. There is some wind noise at higher speeds as well as some road noise compared to newer Mercedes Benzes. But everything feels solid as heck. There are very little sqeaks and rattles for something that was fresh in 1987. Both Adlis K and I give full credit to the previous owner for keeping this car in immaculate condition.

We shall be regularly featuring this car in months (and years to come). It will be in our garage of project cars where we try make this car slightly better. This will start with renewing the car's fabric seats and re-wraping the original AMG steering wheel as well as some performance mods to try give this old girl a little more Ooomph.

Old skool rocks. This car proves that older cars are still a heckuva fun to hustle about in. And if there ever was an argument against the scrapping of older cars, this car is it.
