Spotted for sale: Mercedes Benz 190E Evolution II Replica - The price asked? A whopping RM50K

6:33 AM 0
You're not going to see this for sale very often. This is a replica of the 1990 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II. Asking price is an extremely high RM50,000 for something which is not an original. Simple tell-tales would be the fact that the original was only made in left-hand drive. The fact that there were only 502 made by Mercedes Benz means that if it were a real thing it would also cost in excess of USD$100,000 these days. I actually wrote about the original here some days back in fact.

So why do I think the chap is asking RM50,000 for his replica? It actually looks bloody nice in fact. But personally, after you do the math it does not reason out logically. Of course a standard 190e 2.0 car would cost you RM15,000 at the most. A 2.5-16 Cosworth engine could cost you RM15,000 with labour and new parts. The bodykit from Indonesia and paint at RM15,000 with all taxes. This leaves about RM5,000 for the interior and wheels. I suppose he is just trying to recoup his expenses. But RM50,000 for something that is just a very well done up replica is a little pricey.

But who knows. The car is stunning that much I can say. As much as I would love to have a 190E 2.5-16 Evo II I'd personally pay half the amount at the most. And that would be pushing it. As for the amount asked, I could get an original 2.5-16. It usually sells for RM35,000-45,000 these days here in Malaysia. Now that would give you proper bragging rights at the club. Yes?

Our Cars: W201 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3 8v - SOLD

7:19 AM 0

Yup. Serial car buyer....no, make it serial Mercedes car buyer Adlis K has since sold off that beautiful 190e 2.3-16 lookalike of his as of a month or so ago. The reason of the sale after a helluva paint job, the refurbishment of those gorgeous 190e Evolution wheels, a change of a whole lot of mechanical parts like the propshaft bearings, mountings and other stuff is the funding of another car. It usually is......with this friend of mine. Much like the sale of his previous W124 200e that looked like a 500e.

The 2.3 8 valve was a nice little car to drive if you guys noted from the earlier posting of it. What I loved about it was the smaller, nimbler size it had over the larger Mercedes sedans but it kept all of the same quality you found in the larger Mercedes. Much like the current crop of baby Benzes, the A class and CLA class cars. But the difference was that the w201 190e had a ride that is comfortable and soaked up road imperfections that the newer cars would allow you to feel through your buttocks. Handling was still good if not great. If it wasn't, Mercedes would not have won races with it (especially the DTM). The 2.3 8 valve engine isn't as great as the one with the 16 valve head that Cosworth helped build but it still had that all important torque. No under 8 seconds 0-100kmh dash, but under 10 was achievable. Decently fast for something that was born in 1987.

Now, we talked about the sale and Adlis K noted that if this were a 16 valver, it may not have happened. The real deal would most probably be kept for a while longer than a year or so. Original Cossies go for RM45,000 in good nick. Bad ones come in at around Rm30,000 and get sold almost immediately. Once I remember browsing an advert for one on sale at RM29k and by the next day it was sold. Amazing demand for these specialty mercs here in the Klang Valley.

I'll leave you some pics of the car before, during and after Adlis K's efforts. I shall......miss it. But, I have to tell you guys that the next car he's buying is a thing of beauty. It's still another classic Mercedes by the way.
Quality lasts long after the original (truly expensive) price is forgotten. Stay tuned folks.

And here's a mega 'up yours' to older cars being unsafe - A 1987 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3 8v

8:08 PM 0

I just drove this car a few days and God, it was comfortable and surprisingly nimble. It also felt as solid or even better than newer cars costing RM80,000. The car in question is a 1987 190e 2.3 8valve with a 2.3-16 bodykit with a front AMG bumper. The wheels are original 8.75in x 17 Mercedes Evo 2 wheels plucked from the utterly mad 190e 2.5-16 Evo 2. It makes 134hp and 205Nm in stock form.

This car  was just purchased by serial car buyer and car enthusiast Adlis K. Those that follow this site would remember him as the owner of the pretty fabulous W124 Mercedes 200E equipped with a 500e bodykit.

Upon taking the steering wheel from Adlis K and driving the 190e 2.3 I first noticed that the ride is sublime even with its slightly modded suspension setup. It rides on a lowered spring mounts coupled with 17 inch EVO 2 wheels on 215/45/17 tyres. You notice that it soaks up uneven road surfaces with ease It is slightly firmer than a W124 of the same era but you can throw the 190e into corners with more abandon if you wanted to. I suppose this is because of its size as both share a similar front and rear suspension setup. In fact the rear multi-link suspension was first used in this W201 190e before being adopted in the W124.  How good you say the ride is? It is even better than a current model w204 c-class (I should know as I own one).

The 2.3liter 8 valve was the base engine on which the legendary 16 valve variant was built on. That car had the same bottom-end (pistons, conrods and block) but a totally new Cosworth designed head. Adlis K was actually on the hunt for one but it never seems to be on sale locally. There was one a few weeks ago but that was snapped up even faster than one could say "Mercedes Benz 2.3-16". People are jumping at these old Mercedes'!

Anyway, this 190e 2.3 is not a slouch. It may not be lighting fast in its acceleration (0-100km in about 10secs when new and 200km/h max speed) but the torque makes it a better drive than any 2.0liter Mercedes of the same era. The four speed automatic is a good match for the car's demeanor and shifts quite smoothly. Kickdown on the automatic is pretty good too. If you drive this car fast round a bend it surprisingly grips with the usual tinge of Mercedes understeer before going neutral mid corner. Not enough power to throw out its tail in the dry however. There is some wind noise at higher speeds as well as some road noise compared to newer Mercedes Benzes. But everything feels solid as heck. There are very little sqeaks and rattles for something that was fresh in 1987. Both Adlis K and I give full credit to the previous owner for keeping this car in immaculate condition.

We shall be regularly featuring this car in months (and years to come). It will be in our garage of project cars where we try make this car slightly better. This will start with renewing the car's fabric seats and re-wraping the original AMG steering wheel as well as some performance mods to try give this old girl a little more Ooomph.

Old skool rocks. This car proves that older cars are still a heckuva fun to hustle about in. And if there ever was an argument against the scrapping of older cars, this car is it.
