Driven: 1996 Mercedes Benz R170 SLK230 Kompressor with only 22,000+ miles on the clock

7:29 AM 0

The Mercedes Benz you see above is the 1996 Mercedes Benz R170 SLK230 Kompressor. It is a roadster by definition and is the first of the small compact Mercedes Benz designed to capitalise on the emergence of the compact luxury car market. The car in some ways was to compete with the more affordable Mazda MX5 roadster as well as ending up going head to head with other compact coupes like the BMW Z3 and the Porsche Boxster.

The designation "SLK" derives from the company's design mission to create a roadster that was sporty, light and short - sportlich, leicht und kurz. It was also one of the first retractable hard top roadsters. Prior to this most came with a canvas soft top with the option of a removable hard top which you stowed away at home. The folding metal roof made it very practical and also added a level of security you don't find in normal soft tops. Thieves with knives would find the knife useless as there was no canvas top to cut through.

Anyway, I got to drive this roadster recently. 22,000 plus miles on the clock and quite a vehicle. It was a company director's car that was hardly used throughout its life. The new owner (only the third) of this car had treated it to a respray after he sourced a facelifted (post 2000 cars) front and rear bumpers and side skirts. AMG 17 inch wheels with the correct offset and tyre size were also sourced. It was given a full checkup at a Mercedes Benz specialist too. So to my eyes this car from the mid 1990s looked pretty up to date. You actually wouldn't have thought that this car came from 1996. It is quite up to date actually.

So whilst the R170 SLK230 Kompressor still looks pretty current it does not drive like a car from 2015. It does feel like something from 1995. It may be a small and compact looking roadster, but when you start driving, it feels like a Mercedes Benz from an age gone by. The recirculating ball steering rack is so detatched from the road that when you turn the wheel hard it actually takes a split second or two before the car actually makes that direction change. You turn the wheel and then straighten it out immediately it would actually feel like the car just started to turn when you have already straightened out the wheel. It isn't direct at all. When you press the accelerator pedal you wait a while before the engine reacts. This is supposedly a very healthy low mileage supercharged roadster. You are cruising at around 2,000rpm. You press full throttle, wait, and then you hear the wail of the supercharged engine reacting. Then you wait till it gets to about 3,500rpm before it explodes. Then the fun begins.

This car is all about mid range pull and above. It is just about the building up of speed instead of instantaneous power. It does feel in some ways like the C36 AMG I drove a while ago. You press the throttle, speed builds up and suddenly you feel a rapid surge at mid-range and above. This would basically mean that if you leave it to its 5 speed automatic gearbox, you will feel nothing rapid happening below 3,000rpm and suddenly at around 3,750rpm the revs climb harder and higher faster. The engine had just woken up and suddenly found some legs. I don't think there is a hole in the gearing of the car. For a supercharged engine this car is very cammy in feel with power coming in later in the rev range. Like a rolling stone. It starts of slowly and then halfway down the hill it becomes unstoppable. That sudden rush makes the drive thrilling to some aspects.

Official specifications say that the R170 SLK 230 does the 0-100kmh time in about 7.6seconds for a 1996 model. I have no doubt this car would manage the same time but is from a standing start. Driving it on the roads requires some work on you part. Whilst specs say that its 280Nm torque comes in at 2,500rpm I doubt this is so. This car had 22,000 genuine miles on the clock. A low miler with a healthy engine. Everything only comes into play above 3,500rpm. At least I get to enjoy the whine of the supercharger. It does add some character that the stock exhaust does not add to the drive experience - the exhaust is tinny in sound. Needs one of those Remus or Brabus backboxes to bring out some bass.

Now handling of the SLK230. So you basically if you're gunning it, you HAVE TO turn in early to corner, then you also have to plan ahead on when and where you'd like the power to come in too. This is actually a car that you would need to do some planning and managing if you want to drive really fast. There is grip in the chassis and the larger 225/45/17 and 245/40/17 tyres (set on AMG alloy wheels). But being a mid-1990s Mercedes Benz, the traction control plays it safe and if you exited a junction in the wet, it would be flashing away whilst you are flooring it. It isn't super intrusive but you know its there if you really start pushing it. The traction control also does not fully go away even if you turn it off. The brakes are quite reasonable with sufficient (for something so old) bite. It does have a bit of travel but it isn't as bad as if it were a W124 Mercedes Benz sedan.

So a Porsche Boxster from the same era would run rings around this SLK. But it still brings you a sense of occasion when you drive this. Maybe this is what it is all about with the SLK230. I still like the car even though I would have to actually work hard to drive properly fast in it. Maybe this is because trying to drive fast in a modern car isn't as challenging as driving this. It is quite easy to drive fast in a Volkswagen Passat 1.8TSI compared to this. Maybe it is the thrill of driving a brute or a challenge that makes this drive in the SLK230 a drive to remember more than even if you go faster in a more modern car.

However, once you are pottering around in the suburbs things are sedate and serene. As its a Mercedes Benz, this roadster does wafting and open top motoring very well. Everything at low speeds is perfect. The steering weight, the throttle, the steering and everything you touch feels good. It is a little brittle according to the owner. This was the time when Mercedes Benz decided that their cars were overbuilt and they decided to cut costs. Big mistake. It cost them and it was only after 2004-2005 that things were nearly as normal as before. The only non-build quality issue that is irritating is the noise the folding hardtop makes when it is up. It squeaks and rattles a fair bit. It needs frequent lubrication of the rubber seals and joints but that is a chore that hasn't been done yet. The owner has to frequently utilise the folding roof often so that the motor is exercised too. Lack of use would also jam it up. Convertible ownership has its ups and downs.

Now that was a nice pun, wasn't it. And yes. I loved this car. I loved its characteristics and its flaws. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. Most old Mercedes Benz aren't. But that sense of occasion they give is something I always treasure.

The 17 inch AMG alloy wheels make the car look better than on its standard 16 inches.

The lucky owner with the top down...

After a facelift, the ML Becomes the GLE - Mercedes Benz previews the GLE Class

6:37 PM 0

Meercedes Benz has revised the ML series of SUV and it is now called the GLE series in the vast range of Mercedes Benz automobiles. New front and rear styling, better emissions (up to 17% better), better fuel consumption and a plug in hybrid model too. The press release is quite interesting, especially right at the end where it explains the new naming of Mercedes Benz automobiles.

We know that Mercedes Benz have renamed the ML into GLE simply because SUVs are now G(L) class and E from the E-class segment. So this is more straightforward.  GLA for A class SUV, GLC for C class SUV and GLE for the E class size.

PRESS RELEASE

Première for the Mercedes-Benz GLE and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63: Efficiency meets performance

Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz has thoroughly revised its best-seller in the SUV segment. The highlights of the new GLE include considerably more appealing front and tail ends and extensive measures which make new benchmarks with regard to emissions and drive system possible. Across the available engine range, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced by 17 percent on average compared with the predecessor model series. For the first time in its SUV history, Mercedes-Benz offers a plug-in hybrid model, the GLE 500 e 4MATIC, which combines maximum efficiency with outstanding performance. This multi-talent will even best the already low fuel consumption figures of the efficiency champion GLE 250 d with four-cylinder diesel engine, while delivering the performance of a V8 model. The advantages of the new GLE furthermore include best on-road and off-road handling, outstanding spaciousness and high levels of active and passive safety. The high-performance SUV models, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC and the GLE 63 S 4MATIC, celebrate their world premières at the same time.

"State-of-the-art and efficient drive technology, combined with superior ride quality and the versatility and robustness typical for SUVs - the new GLE has all the ingredients to continue the success story of our best-seller", is how Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz Cars, characterises the newest member of the Mercedes-Benz SUV family. Outstanding safety and a high level of driving dynamics both on the road and in terrain are among the other strengths of the premium SUV. Furthermore, the GLE impresses with ground-breaking assistance systems, the nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and the innovative DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, which offers extensive drive and off-road programmes already in basic specification.

The unmistakable design with the hallmark C-pillar and the variable interior with the wellness factor of a luxurious saloon model enrich the Mercedes-Benz GLE experience additionally. "Often copied, rarely equalled - the M-Class established the segment of premium SUVs in 1997 and since then has been one of the most successful models in the world. With the launch of the GLE, the edition will surpass the 1.6 million mark", Källenius went on to say. And Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, added: "With the new GLE 63 and seven additional performance SUV models from the GLA 45 AMG to the G 65 AMG, Mercedes-AMG is in an extremely strong and very confident position. All three generations of the predecessors were highly popular. We offer the right performance automobile for every individual taste in the further growing SUV segment".

Diesel and hybrid drive: efficiency meets the joy of driving

In addition to the appealing design, the variable driving experience thanks to DYNAMIC SELECT and the assistance systems familiar from the E- and S-Class, the GLE impresses with an extensive engine line-up. Five equally efficient and powerful engines with four, six or eight cylinders are available to choose from. The special focus:
the 150-kW (204-hp) four-cylinder diesel model GLE 250 d offers superior performance with an all-time low fuel consumption for this class of vehicles. It is the world's first production full-size SUV with conventional drive that emits just 140 g of CO2/km (5.4 l/100 km).
No less impressive is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV with plug-in hybrid technology. A system output of 325 kW (442 hp) in the GLE 500 e 4MATIC guarantees brilliant performance - with CO2 emissions of just 78 g/km (3.3 l/100 km). With a power consumption of 16.7 kWh/100 km, the GLE 500 e 4MATIC is the benchmark in this market segment. In addition, the hybrid model is capable of up to 30 kilometres of all-electric driving.

GLE 500 e 4MATIC: plug-in hybrid technology meets SUV

The new GLE 500 e 4MATIC with plug-in hybrid drive combines the power and refinement of a V8 engine with the fuel consumption of a three-litre car and the versatility of a premium SUV. The drive system components comprise a BlueDIRECT V6 direct-injection petrol engine with 245 kW (333 hp) and a hybrid module with 85 kW (116 hp) of electric power. The system peak torque is a massive 650 Newton metres. In addition to impressive acceleration thanks to the boost function, the innovative system drive also offers all-electric driving at speeds up to 130 km/h, optimised energy recovery thanks to the intelligent operating strategy and comfort functions such as pre-entry climate control in summer and winter.
A selector switch on the centre console and the instrument cluster offer the driver a choice between four specific operating modes:
HYBRID: the system controls automatically select the most sensible operating mode with combustion engine and/or electric motor for optimising the overall energy balance
E-MODE: all-electric driving
E-SAVE: this mode preserves the current state of charge of the battery to be able to drive on all-electric power at a later time, for example in urban traffic
CHARGE: battery is charged while driving and when the vehicle is stationary
The compact hybrid module is fully integrated into the seven-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. The electrical energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery with an energy content of 8.8 kWh, which can be recharged using public charging stations, the wallbox charger at home or on a conventional 220 volt power outlet. The charging time using the wallbox charger or the charging station is around two hours.
Intelligent drive system management
The best strategy for efficient driving has always been anticipatory driving without unnecessary braking and accelerating. This is even more important in a hybrid model: because braking manoeuvres serve not only to deliver deceleration, but are also used to recover kinetic energy. The route or the traffic also has influence on the most efficient charging and discharging of the high-voltage battery. For this reason the intelligent drive system management aids the driver with specific control strategies in adopting the most efficient driving style.

State-of-the-art BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 petrol engines

The powerful GLE 500 4MATIC with direct-injection twin-turbo V8 engine produces an output of 320 kW (435 hp) and a peak torque of 700 Newton metres, and combines appealing performance with the high level of refinement of these engines. The GLE 400 4MATIC is powered by a direct-injection twin-turbo V6 engine with spray-guided combustion, new piezo injectors and MSI multi-spark ignition. This engine produces an output of 245 kW (333 hp) and 480 Nm of torque from 1400 rpm and makes do on 8.8 l/100 km or 209 g CO2/km (NEDC combined).

Popular V6 diesel engine, new 9G-TRONIC

In addition to the equally efficient and powerful four-cylinder diesel engine for the GLE 250 d and GLE 250 d 4MATIC models with an output of 150 kW (204 hp), the proven V6 diesel engine producing 190 kW (258 hp) of power and a hefty torque of 620 Newton metres is available in the GLE 350 d 4MATIC. An extensive package of measures makes a cut in fuel consumption from the previous model by around nine percent to 6.4 l/100 km (NEDC combined) possible. The updates involve above all a modified engine control unit with combustion management, which in particular during the warm-up phase regulates the injection of diesel fuel for each cylinder in dependence of the combustion air. The emissions-reducing and fuel-saving measures furthermore include an optimised turbocharger, a revised EGR valve and a new demand-controlled rotary vane oil pump.

With the start of the new GLE generation, all diesel models will be equipped with the nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission as standard, for the first time also with the optionally available off-road reduction gear and inter-axle differential lock. The transmission is fitted with a new type of torque converter with a high efficiency of 92 percent and a wide spread of 9.15 across the nine speeds. Both contribute to the high energy efficiency of the GLE models. A double turbine torsional damper with centrifugal pendulum and the torque converter lock-up clutch with return spring ensure the extremely refined operation typical of the brand. Depending on the mode selected for the DYNAMIC SELECT variable dynamic handling control system, the 9G-TRONIC impresses with great agility and responsiveness or poised composure. In this process the potential of the new transmission is exploited to the full. It impresses with fast gear changes and perfect transitions for energetic sprinting as well as with gentle, barely perceptible gear changes for delightful cruising and with gear-change strategies designed to increase traction in terrain.

Workout for the best-seller: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and GLE 63 S

The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC is now stronger and more appealing than ever with an expanded model line-up and even more power. Following the introduction of the new naming logic, the successor of the successful Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG is now called the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63. The AMG 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine is even more powerful than before: in addition to the basic variant developing 410 kW (557 hp), there is also the highly sporty S-Model to choose from which is rated at 430 kW (585 hp). The chassis was completely revised to deliver even better driving dynamics and agility. The throttle response of the engine and the shift times of the transmission are now on a new, even sportier level and thereby underscore the hallmark AMG Driving Performance. With the characteristic AMG family face featuring “A-wing” and twin-blade radiator grille, the power SUV also has a more dynamic appearance than before.

DYNAMIC SELECT combined with off-road drive programmes

The DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system of the new GLE offers up to six drive programmes. In addition to the established settings INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SLIPPERY and SPORT, in the 4MATIC models the driver can choose the additional OFFROAD setting for mild terrain with the DYNAMIC SELECT controller on the centre console. If the GLE model is equipped with the optional Off-Road Engineering package, the OFFROAD+ setting is available. In this setting, the off-road reduction gear and a 100% inter-axle differential lock come into play to generate high traction even in challenging terrain. This is further boosted by the expanded functions of the AIRMATIC air suspension with raised ride heights for a ground clearance of up to 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres. The reinforced underfloor panelling of this equipment variant protects important components against not so gentle contact with the ground.

The selection of the individual drive programmes effects the DYNAMIC SELECT variable dynamic handling control system to activate entirely different characteristics. the system networks all the control systems, generating different sets of parameters for distinct driving experiences. The names speak for themselves: SPORT turns the GLE into a sporty and dynamic vehicle with strong linear and lateral dynamics. COMFORT is the opposite end of the spectrum. Here the emphasis is on the feel-good parameters so typical of classic Mercedes-Benz saloon cars, for relaxed, effortless cruising with the greatest possible energy efficiency. SLIPPERY optimises the handling on surfaces with low friction coefficients such as snow or ice. And special off-road algorithms for ABS, 4ETS or ESP boost traction in the OFFROAD settings. In addition, INDIVIDUAL mode enables the driver to programme and store personal preferences in the individual control strategies, regardless of the engine variant.
All DYNAMIC SELECT programmes are visualised on the central media display. Especially impressive are the off-road animations: various parameters such as slope angle, tilt angle, steering angle or heading are displayed dynamically in real time.
Superior high everyday practicality and perfect traction, sports-car agility and spontaneous throttle response – the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 guarantees its driver an exclusive driving experience without parallel. DYNAMIC SELECT is a major factor in this as well: the drive programmes provide even more variety in the area of driving dynamics. The additional SPORT+ setting offers the driver tailor-made characteristics for particularly sporty driving dynamics. Throttle response, gear-change strategy, ESP® thresholds, steering power assist or the characteristic of the continuous damper adjustment exclusive to AMG: the system networks all the control systems, generating a wide variety of distinct driving experiences.

The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system with a balanced 50:50 torque split between front and rear axle inherently boosts the safe, harmonious and sporty handling. A new rear-axle differential with aluminium case is considerably more efficient and furthermore weight-optimised. Mercedes-AMG uses a special transfer case for the AMG Performance 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive in the GLE 63 and GLE 63 S. This exclusive solution splits the torque at a ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axles, resulting in greater agility about the vertical axis of the vehicle. The pay-off for the driver: even more dynamic cornering.
Stable combination: AIRMATIC ADS and ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM

In addition to the ground-breaking powertrain configuration, the retuned AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS variable damping system guarantees extremely stable driving. The damping system changes its priorities depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. SPORT focuses on the greatest possible lateral dynamics with the best possible ride quality. Conversely, COMFORT mode enables maximum ride quality with the best possible dynamics. The current handling conditions are detected via a steering angle sensor, four rotation sensors, the driving speed from the ESP® signal and the brake pedal switch. The control unit uses these signals for continuous adjustment of the current damping force for each individual wheel.

In the GLE 350 d 4MATIC, GLE 400 4MATIC and GLE 500 4MATIC models, the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation system can be combined with the AIRMATIC package with air suspension and ADS or with the Off-Road Engineering package. The system uses active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axle and compensates the roll angle of the body during cornering. This enhances agility and driving fun. At the same time, the system provides increased handling stability and therefore safety, especially at higher speeds. Better driving comfort both when cornering and on straights as well as expanded off-road capabilities are also part of the advantages of the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM.
All models with four- and six-cylinder engines are equipped with the AGILITY CONTROL steel suspension as standard. The AIRMATIC package with ADS is optionally available for these versions. An electro-mechanical Direct-Steer system is standard on all models.

The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package comprises more than just the air suspension with automatic level control. The new GLE 63 is also fitted with special struts, which were refined with ADS Plus continuously variable dampers, a solution exclusive to AMG. The ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation system is part of the standard equipment in this model.
For the first time in this segment, Mercedes-Benz is offering a power extendible and retractable trailer coupling, which also includes ESP® trailer stabilisation. The towing capacity of the GLE is up to 3500 kg.
High protective potential through comprehensive safety

As is already a tradition, the new GLE impresses with outstanding active and passive safety. The models regularly score highest marks in the international crash ratings. With its high protective potential, the GLE also creates the best conditions for passing future tests with the highest rating. The comprehensive safety concept follows the brand's hallmark strategy and comprises four areas:
Safe driving: avoid dangers, provide timely warnings, and aid the driver with extensive assistance systems
In the event of danger: prevent and activate protective measures preventively (PreSAFE®)
In the event of an accident: provide tailor-made protection with a highly stable passenger cell, defined deformation zones and restraint systems such as airbags or belt tensioners
After an accident: prevent the worst and make swift assistance possible

Modern times: new design with classic style elements

Even at first glance, the new GLE blends tradition and modernity. Classic SUV elements meet modern Mercedes-Benz design and form a convincing whole. On one hand, the confident appearance of the GLE is enhanced with the typical stylistic features of all generations: the characteristic C-pillar and the harmoniously integrated rear side window have been an integral part since this model series started in 1997. At the same time, elements of the modern Mercedes-Benz design idiom catch the eye. Radiator grille, bumpers, headlamps, wings and the bonnet with its two power domes follow the current sensuous and clear design idiom of Mercedes-Benz. Especially the harmonious, organic transition of the two radiator louvres to the central Mercedes star is convincing. New headlamps with the daytime driving lights forming the brand's hallmark eyebrows and the current lamp layout - optionally as LED Intelligent Light-System - blend harmoniously with the front end. The new wings with their arched wheel wells lend the entire front end more harmony and presence.

The tail end of the GLE was likewise matched to the current design idiom and updated cautiously. New LED tail lamps now glow in the brand's hallmark night design. Also striking are the redesigned tailpipe embellishers firmly integrated in to the lower section of the bumper. Front and rear bumper furthermore are fitted with the likewise characteristic three-dimensional chrome-look underride guard. New light-alloy wheels boost the superior appearance of the new GLE.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and 63 S: powerful sportiness with "A-wing"

Performance and perfection revealed: the design of the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 inspires with exclusivity, powerful sportiness and dominance. It underscores the progressiveness of the AMG brand and transports the impressive motor sport history. From now on, the new GLE 63 also sports the distinctive "A?wing" in the front bumper, which is characteristic for the AMG design philosophy. The design of the radiator grille with the silver chrome double louvre, the integrated AMG lettering and the central Mercedes star are distinguishing features of current AMG Performance automobiles.
The performance SUV also impresses with dominance when viewed from the side. Wheel arch flares in vehicle colour provide space for the large wheels. As standard, tyres of size 265/45 R 20 are mounted on 9J x 20 AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with high-sheen finish. Optionally the GLE 63 can be upgraded in terms of looks and driving dynamics with tyres of size 295/35 R 21.
The black diffuser insert in the rear bumper with black trim strip in the shape of the front “A-wing” represents typical motor racing design. The special exhaust system with two chrome-plated dual tailpipe embellishers and "AMG" lettering underscores the sportiness and exclusivity.

Detail work for an even more harmonious interior*

In the interior the larger media display stands out, which is now partially integrated into the instrument panel. The centre air vents next to the display and the outer air vents are framed by classy silver shadow surrounds. In combination with the black high-gloss surround this emphasises the sophisticated design of the interior. The centre console houses the COMAND controller with the touchpad fitted above in an optimal ergonomic position.

New colours make the interior even more attractive and lend it the feel-good atmosphere that is typical of the brand. The choices now also include ginger beige, espresso brown, saddle brown or porcelain, which in combination with black interior elements create an interesting contrast. In addition to the standard aluminium with light-coloured longitudinal grain, the large trim elements are also available in a version featuring a particularly classy black piano lacquer or various types of wood: open-pore brown ash wood or the shiny wood types brown eucalyptus, black poplar or brown burred walnut. And especially sporty minded customers can choose high-quality AMG carbon-fibre trim.

Complete standard equipment, attractive equipment packages*

The extensive range of standard equipment of the new GLE is based on the predecessor model, enhanced with new assistance systems such as Crosswind Assist and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. ECO start/stop function, the DYNAMIC SELECT controller on the centre console, the revised multifunction
steering wheel as well as the Audio 20 CD infotainment system with 7-inch display and communications module for the use of Mercedes connect me services are also part of the standard delivery scope.

The fitting complement is the 3-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel with flat bottom and silver paddle shifters with "UP“ and "DOWN" lettering.
Two tube-shaped round dials with silver chrome surrounds and the central 11.4-cm (4.4?inch) multifunction display provide the driver with comprehensive information. The typical AMG equipment scope includes sporty dials in carbon-fibre look with 320-km/h speedometer scale, AMG lettering and red pointers, as well as the main menu including RACETIMER, manual gear indicator and AMG start-up screen. The top-of-the-line Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S model offers nappa leather exclusive AMG upholstery in addition - a highlight both in terms of looks and touch and feel.

"G" to the fore: the new SUV nomenclature
Mercedes-Benz has rearranged its successful SUV model range. The multifunctional all-rounders now always carry a G in their name as a reminiscence to the legendary G-Class. The name in each case is an acronym of three letters. The G is always followed by an L, the third letter facilitates orientation in the SUV line-up based on the passenger car model range of Mercedes-Benz. In detail, this new naming scheme results in the following nomenclature for the SUV and off-
roader range in which only the legendary G-Class on account of its unchanged model designation signals its special position as the forefather of all modern SUVs and off-roaders:

GLA SUV in the A-Class segment
GLC SUV in the C-Class segment; formerly GLK
GLE SUV in the E-Class segment; formerly M-Class
GLE Coupé SUV in the E-Class Coupé segment
GLS SUV in the S-Class segment; formerly GL
G unchanged
The names of the AMG model series are also adapted accordingly:
Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 4MATIC
Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 / GLE 63 S 4MATIC
Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 / GLE 63 S Coupé 4MATIC
Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 / GLS 63 S 4MATIC
Mercedes-AMG G 63 / G 65

Our Cars: W201 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3 8v - SOLD

7:19 AM 0

Yup. Serial car buyer....no, make it serial Mercedes car buyer Adlis K has since sold off that beautiful 190e 2.3-16 lookalike of his as of a month or so ago. The reason of the sale after a helluva paint job, the refurbishment of those gorgeous 190e Evolution wheels, a change of a whole lot of mechanical parts like the propshaft bearings, mountings and other stuff is the funding of another car. It usually is......with this friend of mine. Much like the sale of his previous W124 200e that looked like a 500e.

The 2.3 8 valve was a nice little car to drive if you guys noted from the earlier posting of it. What I loved about it was the smaller, nimbler size it had over the larger Mercedes sedans but it kept all of the same quality you found in the larger Mercedes. Much like the current crop of baby Benzes, the A class and CLA class cars. But the difference was that the w201 190e had a ride that is comfortable and soaked up road imperfections that the newer cars would allow you to feel through your buttocks. Handling was still good if not great. If it wasn't, Mercedes would not have won races with it (especially the DTM). The 2.3 8 valve engine isn't as great as the one with the 16 valve head that Cosworth helped build but it still had that all important torque. No under 8 seconds 0-100kmh dash, but under 10 was achievable. Decently fast for something that was born in 1987.

Now, we talked about the sale and Adlis K noted that if this were a 16 valver, it may not have happened. The real deal would most probably be kept for a while longer than a year or so. Original Cossies go for RM45,000 in good nick. Bad ones come in at around Rm30,000 and get sold almost immediately. Once I remember browsing an advert for one on sale at RM29k and by the next day it was sold. Amazing demand for these specialty mercs here in the Klang Valley.

I'll leave you some pics of the car before, during and after Adlis K's efforts. I shall......miss it. But, I have to tell you guys that the next car he's buying is a thing of beauty. It's still another classic Mercedes by the way.
Quality lasts long after the original (truly expensive) price is forgotten. Stay tuned folks.

Mercedes AMG previews a new engine for its upcoming GT

7:21 AM 0

"A compact design, low power-to-weight ratio, great fuel efficiency, and signature, distinctive AMG sound all work in harmony to create the high-performance AMG 4.0 Liter V8 Biturbo Engine (M178). This engine is truly bigger than the sum of its parts – and a quantum leap into the future of technology."

This is Mercedes Amg's latest 510 hp 4.0liter V8 made for the upcoming SLS replacement, simply called the Mercedes AMG GT. This will trickle down to the upcoming W205 C63 AMG and other models too. It is a sign of engine down sizing, the same like you have already seen with Audi with the RS6 and also in BMW with their M5 - both have smaller capacity turbocharged engines.

But the AMG engine sounds promising. Yes, the AMG sound is still there and beats the heck out of sheer noise presence compared to the other two. Aural pleasure is already more than half the battle won. If a car sounds good, I'd buy it.

And now since its only a 4.0liter, it'll costs us Peninsular Malaysians about RM7000+ instead of RM10,000-RM15,000 depending on whether you have the 5.5liter or 6.3 (6.2 actually) V8 engines. Think of the money you'll save.

Reason to buy a Mercedes Benz AMG

6:12 AM 0
This is very interesting. And hilarious too. 2006 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG with a lawnmover on a trailier beats the shit out of a Nissan 350Z. And the 350Z driver seems to be slightly overconfident too. Watch this folks.

Driven: 1995 Mercedes C36 AMG - Something fabulous from AMG's past.

9:01 PM 0
My C180cgi meets its older, yet more aristocratic sibling

A couple of weeks ago a friend asked whether I was free to accompany him and take a look at an old Mercedes Benz that happened to come on sale. I agreed as it wasn't an ordinary old Mercedes Benz. It was a C36 AMG from 1995.

The Mercedes Benz C36 AMG was the first official production AMG who by the early 1990s had decided that their product line needed something to go head to head with BMW's M3. It was the first official collaboration between the manufacturer and the tuner company after Mercedes had begun its buyout of AMG. At that moment Mercedes were more like partners with an intention to purchase the company wholly and the 1995 -1997 C36 was the first of many.

But unlike more modern AMGs, the C36 was somewhat a half and half thingy. It was Mercedes testing the water carefully before plunging in head on. Whilst sold through Mercedes Benz dealerships, it was still a tuner car at heart. The engine, a 3,606cc 6cylinder twin cam engine was taken from a C280's 2.8liter engine, bored and stroked with an AMG specific cylinder head which made 276hp (some made more – up to 287hp as it was hand built like AMGs of today) and 385Nm torque. All did not come with a manual transmission but the ubiquitous Mercedes 4 speed automatic (later a 5 speed for a short, short period before the C36 was replaced by the V8 powered C43 AMG). It had no traction control and had a tuned suspension kit which lowered the car by 25mm. Aside from this mods, the C36 was given the subtlest of all bodykits and twin squared off tailpipes. It actually looked like a C280 Sport if one wasn't concentrating but if you happened to be beside one at the traffic lights, you'd then find out that it could do 0-100kmh in about 6.7secs and on to a speed limited to 250kmh.

We were greeted by owner Colin who was a very nice chap who showed us the car and its paperwork. I have noticed about three other C36s before this one here in Malaysia and this one is slightly different as it is in the greenish black and the others were silver in colour. It sits more squat than other W202 C-classes and has that stealth car look to it. Most wouldn't notice that this car is a thoroughbred stallion even if it passed by.

We managed to have a go at the car after Colin too us for a spin in it showing us what the car is capable of doing. You will notice that the car drives like any other W202 C-class from the 1990s. It has that same driving position and steering wheel (albeit with grey leather on the base of the steering wheel) as any other W202 out there. It also has the same dashboard with the exception of the higher end automatic climate control located above the radio player. Now even though people say that the W202 does not have the same bank vault feeling of the previous 190e or that of a W124 E-Class I'd say that it still is rather more solid than any car from the 1990s ought to have been.

And then when you're on the move you find out that the supposedly harder sports suspension is actually extremely comfortable by modern standards. It is a revelation how something with supposedly 276hp rides. Yes it is harder than some W124 or W210 E-classes out there but compare this to even a newer W204 C-Class it actually is bloody comfortable. Owner Colin says that the shocks may be slightly worn but even a change to new ones wouldn't make the ride that much harder. I think even Mercedes Benz AMG have forgotten how to make cars ride this good these days. If we were to compare this to any modern car, you'd be surprise with how much damping and compliance the ride has even though the C36 has to handle 276hp and 385nm torque. These days try sitting in a A250 and think why does 204bhp and 350Nm feel like a brick? I know everyone wants that feeling of firm 'sportiness' but after trying out this old girl I can't think of any reason of why would you want to?

They C36 AMG still uses that totally lifeless recirculating ball steering wheel that all W202 C-class uses. Yes, you can place the car where you want to but don't expect any actually feedback coming through its helm. Even some modern day electric motor based steering racks have more feel and this is one of those typical Mercedes idiosyncrasies from the days gone by. Of course, it makes stress free driving as no vibrations will get to you through the steering rack. You also note that everything comes from the standard W202 C-class and the steering wheel somehow sits more on your lap instead of being able to be brought up further for a proper sporty driving position. It goes against the convention of how a sports saloon should be due to its 'proper' Mercedes Benz upbringing.

Now with that 3.6liter engine the C36 is extremely fun to drive. Even with the numb steering you can actually place the car where you want to by pointing it where you want to and then let the engine put you where you want to. The accelerator pedal is springy and a little weightly like most Mercedes Benz cars of this era but this time it is consistent. You don't have to go through the hassle of learning some two step throttle action whilst driving it. It is very possible to modulate or do throttle based adjustments with ease in here.

When it comes to full bore 0-100kmh times, the C36 feels average. It does not do starts from a standstill very well as it only has four gears spread out but mid-range pull is quite immense. What you don't get from this is a gradual buildup of speed until all goes ballistic between 60-120kmh and more. It feels quite explosive between this speeds. Much like a small snowball slowly gathering up snow and speed until it suddenly is massively big and fast. This car is all about mid-range pull and high speed cruising rather than anything else. What's also fun is the engine itself, it sounds slighty tappety and rough on startup, much like something from a tuned car instead of a Mercedes Benz. The sound goes all hard edged and gruff when you stroke it a little and you can tell that this is something slightly different. And not the ordinary Mercedes Benz or any normal car for that matter.

And oh, it has no driver's aids whatsoever. Your right foot is the traction control and what would stop the tail from coming around. That being said, it is not that easy to do so in the dry. Of course these days you could get the same feeling or even a more accelerative feeling from a turbocharged 2.0liter 4 pot.

However one must note that the C36 is not a super saloon in the mould of the C63 or E63 AMGs of today. It can be considered as a sports saloon or a tuned saloon as it has that type of vibe. Why so? 276hp is the norm for most 2.0liter turbocharged sports saloons these days and even super saloons have at least 500hp and ooodles of torque too. It feels fast, but not mega fast. If you want just all out speed you may have to look elsewhere. And you have to take into account all the idiosyncrasies that all Mercedes Benz of that era have and all the performance hardware you'd think that this was a totally schizophrenic type of car.

Imagine, numb and low set steering, springy throttle pedal, conservative gearbox and styling but with a tuned 3.6liter straight six, explosive mid range, top speed and good handling. But if you think of it as a gentleman's bruiser then it's something special. It is akin to someone like a suave secret agent, in his tuxedo but capable of throwing a few deadly punches.

What the C36 AMG is these days is a reference point to where AMG came from to what it is today. It showcases what it did when it was a tuner company with great engineering prowess, able to create a better engine from a base engine and tune up the suspension of a regular car by making it better. These days you get everything thrown into an AMG. Take the C63 AMG from example, you get over 500hp which is more than triple what a regular C180 makes and instead of just changing the shocks and springs, AMG now does complete front or rear suspension systems (the C63 has a wider front end compared to the normal C-class). In that sense you see that having a C36 gives to an insight to what AMG was before.

And God, that compliant ride. Why can't Mercedes Benz do this sort of performance car again?

The car is still listed for sale on Mudah.my. You can see it here if you're interested. I would, if I hadn't had a house to renovate earlier this year.

Mercedes Benz S63 AMG coupe previewed

3:36 AM 0
AMG twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter engine delivering 577 bhp (430 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque. RWD only in right hand drive markets. 4Matic option in left hand drive markets. Why do the people driving on the correct side of the road get left out?

The Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe has an optional curve tilting function which recently debuted on the non-AMG S-Class Coupe enabling the vehicle to “lean into (corners) in a manner similar to a motorcyclist.” It can be turned on between 19 mph (30 km/h) and 119 mph (180 km/h) and it’s capable of diminishing the lateral accelerations felt by the passengers by inclining the body up to 2.5 degrees. Err, hello, I would like to use this all the way up to 186mph. Why can’t I do that above 180km/h??????? Mercedes will eventually explain I suppose.

Spotted: Nissan 'AMG' 130y

5:42 AM 0
....or was is OMG? This clearly shows the owner's vision and that why bother buying a proper Mercedes AMG CLA45 (which is the smallest AMG sedan these days) when all you need is a Datsun, errr Nissan 130y.

What you don't see in the photo is there was smoke coming from only one of its twin tail pipes. OMG is more like it. And the 'y' in the 130y must now stand for...Why? Misplaced passion is why. Save up and keep this car standard. OMG instead of AMG indeed.

Classic AMG - The W114 250 and the 300ce 'Hammer'

6:18 AM 0

Here are some photos of the earlier AMG cars long before they became Mercedes Benz-AMG. One is a W114 250 that has been breathed by AMG and the other a 300ce in the wide arch form.

The 1970s 250 was one of the first few cars that AMG breathed upon. Nothing much on the exterior except the lowered stance and wheels but the engine allowed it to chase BMWs. No one modded Mercedes Benz is those days. No, it did not have a stonking V8, the 250's 2.5liter straight six was tuned in the traditional way - camshafts, exhaust, exhaust manifolds, carburetor tweaks, cylinder head port and polishing and pistons. I think 146bhp must have became 180-190bhp at the very least. This was in the 70s. Fast enough to scare the 1974-75 Porsche 911 Carerra drivers. That Porsche had a mere 210hp at the time.

This late 1980s C124 (pictured below) is also part of the famed AMG Hammer cars which was based on the W124/C124 chassis. The stock 300e/ce W124/C124 gets the whole AMG package and in its most final form - wide arches and a ridiculously large 6.0liter V8 engine.(from 5.6liters). Note the interior - you get electrically adjustable RECARO seats, an AMG steering wheel, a 300km/h meter and an AMG gearknob. Everything else is typically W/C124. Amazing isn't it? The 4 door version was the fastest 4 door sedan in the world at that point of time.

The Mercedes Benz CLA 45 AMG

9:03 AM 0
Mercedes Benz AMG previewed this car at the 2013 New York Motor Show. Based on the Mercedes Benz CLA series, a car itself based on the A45 hatchback shares its drivetrain with the hatchback Mercedes Benz A 45 AMG.

The 2013 Mercedes Benz CLA 45 AMG is powered by an AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 355bhp/450Nm torque, 4MATIC all wheel drive, SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, AMG sports suspension with independently developed front and rear axles, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system, 3-stage ESP with "SPORT Handling" mode.

The Mercedes Benz CLA is Mercedes Benz's smallest sedan. It takes over the position from the C-class and in its usual base form is front wheel driven. This baby gets all wheel drive and a sexier bodykit. It does look awkward in certain angles (especially the rear three quarter angle below) but when compared to its rivals, the BMW 1 series and now the newly revealed Audi A3/S3 sedan it knocks the socks out of these cars with its edgier and more aggressive styling. This sort of styling will attract the younger crowd. Just compare its looks with the recently launched A3 sedan. That car looks pedestrian doesn't it?

And with this AMG model, it will whistle and fart as it steamrolls over its rivals. I mean, have you seen the A45 AMG's video release of it running on a track? Wheeee....then proootttt, as the dual clutch gearbox shifts a gear. This is what the CLA 45 AMG will sound like too. Of course, with over 300bhp, it would be pretty fun too. AMG's first highly tuned production 4 cylinder makes this something different too. We used to read, hear or drive AMG V8s. This is a throwback to the days when they used to tune a whole lot of 4 cylinder cars in the 1980s (especially the 190E 2.3-16 variants for their customers).

And what a heck of a way to win over new fans. And to keep old ones very amused and very interested.
