A Session with Mr. Mats Nilsson, MD of Volvo Trucks Malaysia - On the Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Challenge, Hybrid Trucks, B10 biodiesel and more

7:51 PM 0
Mr Mats Nilsson with Mr Nor Rahmat - winner of the 2015 Fuelwatch Challenge Malaysia)

A roller coaster ride. That's what the past month or so has been to Yours Truly. Trips, launches, visits, business meetings, family, hobbies, other pursuits have made it a very interesting period. I now have to put myself back in time to the Volvo Trucks Asia Pacific Fuelwatch Challenge 2015 finals in Hua Hin, Thailand to give you a short report on the session we Malaysian automotive journalists/reporters/bloggers had with Mr Mats Nilsson, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Malaysia.

I'm the chap in blue...trying to look serious and professional during the interview session.

Mr Nilsson, Mats who I shall now address him in this article, is a nice chap who is deeply passionate about Volvo Trucks and Malaysia as well. He has been with the Volvo group since 1995 and for the last three years or so, he has been steering Volvo Trucks Malaysia to greater heights. He and the Volvo Trucks team have so far done a fabulous job here in Malaysia with increased sales to show for it. in 2014, Sales figures stood at a total of 451 units, comprising 422 Volvo and 29 Renault trucks (which are basically Volvo Trucks underneath and a separate business entity from Renault cars - much like Volvo cars and trucks). This was a 38.5% growth in Volvo Trucks sales in Malaysia.

Anyway, our meet and chat session with Mats was about the Fuelwatch Challenge and more. We did not touch too much about the Malaysian economy that is currently seeing a slump these days as it is assumed that austerity measures will and have been taken. Most of us at the point of time were hyped about the Fuelwatch Challenge itself.

The Fuelwatch Challenge is something big for Volvo Trucks Malaysia. According to Mats, at least 1,000 Malaysian drivers took part and this was a 25% increase in participation compared to last year. This has been the sixth year of competition and the competition as well as the increase participation is, according to him proof of the importance of good drivers by fleet or company owners. We see as an example this year's champion, Mr Nor Rahmat Abdul Talib's company Prifaria Sdn Bhd is one of those companies that put heavy emphasis on driver education and training. He also added that in the Malaysian leg, participants also came from companies that uses other brands of trucks and this is a form of marketing for Volvo Trucks. Drivers as well as company managers and operators would benefit from this increase awareness in training, safety and skill derived from this competition. Driver's skills and with the addition of a fleet monitoring system like Volvo's Dynafleet would enable savings in fuel consumption, tyre wear and vehicle maintenance too.

So that is the benefit that drivers and operators. The 2015 APAC Fuelwatch Challenge finals saw stiff competition from the Australian and New Zealand participants. This is mainly because of the familiarity with the Volvo FH series of trucks which were used for the competition this year. Volvo Malaysia has an intention to bring in the FH series trucks to complement the FM series which is the one sold here. No word as to when the FH series trucks are to be actually launched yet by the way.

We then asked that since there were women participants from four countries at this year's challenge so would there be a chance of a Malaysian lady participating in upcoming Fuelwatch Challenges? According to Mats, women drivers in Malaysia would definitely be welcome to participate. It has been shown that women can handle these trucks elsewhere so why should it be different.

As for buses, we asked why isn't there a category for Volvo Buses in the Fuelwatch Challenge? "The bus market is quite small for Volvo at this moment, about 9,000 buses annually worldwide" said Mats, "But we will definitely see". This was the response after we mentioned that even though the market is small but the engagement between driver and the general public is a lot more than a truck driver on the highways. There could be a need to assist in educating bus driver too (especially in Malaysia).

The other interesting question put forward was with the upsurge in motor vehicles going hybrid, would there be a chance of Volvo Trucks selling their diesel hybrid trucks here in Malaysia? Mats said that at this moment there are no plans for now even though there are products available (Volvo FE hybrids - check them out if you're interested). This I believe has to do with pricing, the size of truck (the heavy duty category of hybrid trucks aren't on sale everywhere yet from what I researched in order to write this article)  and whether there would be local acceptance. Pricing would be an issue because the costs of hybrids may be more than what the market wants for a truck.

What Volvo Trucks Malaysia is ready for is, if or when the B10 grade of biodiesel is implemented here in Malaysia. Biodiesel is a diesel fuel produced from plant oils or animal fats. It is commonly sold blended with diesel derived from petroleum. Common blends include "B2" (2% biodiesel), "B5" (5% biodiesel), "B10" (10% biodiesel) and "B100" (100% biodiesel). Here, our B10 would mean 10% palm oil content owing to our large palm oil market of course. We had been hearing press releases from car manufacturers that some of their diesels cannot handle B10 grade and that it would cost damage to the engines. According to Mats, Volvo Trucks sold are able to handle such a grade of diesel. "Volvo is ready" said Mats, with confidence.

There would be no major impact to Volvo Trucks  if and when B10 is implemented. There may be a change in the service schedule for older trucks and an installation of aftermarket kits to enable the older trucks to perform as they should. In fact, Mats then stated that Felda, which operates 90% Volvo Trucks in its large fleet has tested the B10 grade on their trucks with favourable results.

So there you go. The interview with the Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Malaysia who also said that he loves it here in Malaysia (must be the food and the people...as the weather kinda sucks with the haze these days). I do hope this would let you folks understand a little bit more about Volvo Trucks in slightly more detail.

Truck News: Volvo Trucks releases five new features for rough terrain

7:48 AM 0
Volvo Trucks releases five new features for rough terrain

Volvo Trucks continues to improve productivity within construction by releasing another five new features, including Volvo Dynamic Steering for dual front axles and increased front axle loads. This further highlights Volvo Trucks’ special attention to the construction segment.

Volvo Dynamic Steering reduces vibration and filters out bumps penetrating from the
road surface to the steering wheel. Steering becomes smoother and lighter, making
things easier for the driver and reducing the risk of work-related injuries to the neck,
shoulders and back.

The first Volvo FMX from 2010 was followed up with a completely updated version in 2013, including innovative breakthroughs such as Volvo Dynamic Steering. In 2015 Volvo Trucks introduces a new series of solutions that enable trucks and drivers operating in tough conditions to perform their work more smartly and efficiently.

“Volvo trucks have a solid reputation for their quality and drivelines. By adding new, innovative features we give our customers access to a broader range of options and unique ways to improve productivity,” says Ricard Fritz, Vice President, Volvo Trucks Brand.

In addition to introducing a heavy duty bumper for the Volvo FH series and the industry-first Automatic Traction Control function for the Volvo FMX, five more features are now available:

Volvo Dynamic Steering for dual front axles: Volvo Dynamic Steering is now also available on trucks with dual front axles, a very common configuration in construction operations. Since such trucks often carry particularly heavy loads or superstructures, the benefits are very noticeable for the driver. In addition to far lower turning resistance at low speeds, the steering wheel returns automatically to the straight-ahead position after full lock, cutting out the need for added effort in close-quarter manoeuvring and saving the driver both time and energy. Volvo Dynamic Steering, which was launched in 2013 and was showcased in for example the YouTube hit “The Hamster Stunt”, consists of an electric motor that compensates for vibration and steering wheel movement while minimising the amount of force needed to steer the truck.

Increased front axle loads, dual front axles: Volvo’s heavy duty trucks with dual front axles increase the maximum technical capacity from 18 to 20 tonnes. Customers benefit from both improved productivity and added flexibility. The extra capacity translates directly into increased income-earning capacity, something that is particularly valuable when transporting heavy materials in construction operations. On a 4-axle truck with a gross weight of 32 tonnes the load bed is also longer and there is greater flexibility regarding where to place a load such as gravel in a tipper body. This means maximum load is reached more quickly when loading and that the driver can be certain about meeting weight limitations. Higher load capacity above the front axles also permits a greater variety of crane configurations and allows other applications with considerable weight on the front axles.

Five-axle trucks, 10x4 and 10x6: On many markets, the trend is towards increased gross combination weights of between 50 and 76 tonnes. In order to meet the demand for heavier applications both on highways and in construction, Volvo Trucks is now launching factory-built 5-axle combinations. The two front axles permit up to 20 tonnes maximum load and the three rear axles can handle up to 36 tonnes, resulting in both increased payload and greater flexibility for customers. This solution is also suitable for concrete pumps and large crane trucks that need uniform axle load distribution. By reducing pressure on the axles, many of these vehicles can be transported over longer distances on regular highways, resulting in both faster transportation and increased income potential.

Rear air suspension in combination with driven front axle (Volvo FMX): The new possibility of combining an air-suspended rear axle with a driven front axle permits the highest level of comfort even for trucks with all-wheel drive. Whereas leaf springs are generally dimensioned for the heaviest weights, air suspension offers the flexibility of adjustment to suit the weight of the load. This results in a smoother driving experience and less wear on truck, driver and road surface. Thanks to less vibration – especially when the truck is driven without a load – the driver can maintain a higher average speed on bumpy construction site roads and can thus handle more deliveries during each shift. In addition to the enhanced comfort, Volvo Trucks’ air suspension also offers ground clearance of at least 300 mm and effective protection for all vulnerable components.

Electronic Brake System for drum brakes: Now even customers who specify drum brakes for operation in particularly dusty or wet conditions can benefit from the advantages of Volvo’s Electronic Brake System (EBS). The system’s electronics give access to a range of intelligent functions such as Hill Start Aid for better control on steep gradients. Safety is also improved thanks to integration of engine braking and retarder function, known as Brake Blending. In addition to improved brake function, EBS in combination with drum brakes also offers access to Volvo Dynamic Steering (not with drive to the front wheels) and more efficient gear changes since I-Shift obtains some of its information from the electronic braking system.

“We want to be the leading brand in the construction segment just as we are in long haul. These new features in combination with our completely updated product range clearly sets a new standard for what a construction truck can deliver,” says Ricard Fritz, Vice President Volvo Trucks Brand.

The Volvo Trucks construction offer
In addition to the Volvo FMX, Volvo FH and Volvo FH 16, the Volvo Trucks construction vehicle range also encompasses the Volvo FL with four-wheel drive and gross weight of up to 18 tonnes, and the Volvo FE with maximum gross weight of 26 tonnes. Together with an extensive workshop network and advanced services for excellent availability, customers benefit from considerable flexibility to create individually tailored and safe solutions.

PRESS RELEASE
Volvo Malaysia calls all Volvo aftermarket professionals to participate in VISTA World Championship 2015-2016

Shah Alam, 23 June 15: Renowned truck manufacturer Volvo Malaysia yesterday kicked off its largest global competition for aftermarket personnel, the Volvo International Service Training Award (VISTA) in the presence of its employees at its headquarters in Shah Alam.

The biennial competition is designed to educate and develop participants’ technical knowledge and skills as well as to learn about the processes and business chain of how the company works – providing them the opportunity for professional self-development. VISTA is also a very effective way of motivating and inspiring employees, and is an avenue to cultivate teamwork.

Mats Nilsson, Managing Director of Volvo Malaysia said, “VISTA is much more than a competition. It is a mass competency-training event. Our mechanics are the backbone of Volvo Malaysia – making us the best business partner for our customers, throughout the lifetime of our vehicles. This is why we invest heavily in competence development, establish a structured approach to our technicians upgrading, and provide support for further education.”

“VISTA is a simulation of the workshop environment that aims to build skills and share expertise, in addition to motivate and foster teamwork and collaboration among our employees. The competition additionally teaches our aftermarket employees to be pro-active and pre-emptive when diagnosing issues and providing solutions to problems,” said Santhara Saigaran, Market Leader for Volvo VISTA.

Saigaran also added that VISTA is an all-round 360° approach to employee and work excellence. The number of participants for this year’s VISTA competition has also increased and the responses and feedback by dealer managers are equally encouraging.

“The goal is to make us better at what we do every day. This competition is not only important for our aftermarket personnel; it is also of great importance for the entire Volvo Group. It is a way of showing how much we value the hard work carried out at our workshops, and that we invest in what our customers appreciate most – world class service,” added Nilsson.

The improved knowledge and skills set acquired from previous VISTA competitions were applied in the day-to-day work and it has been successfully reflected in the employees’ competency level. This has enhanced the aftermarket quality in Malaysia and has contributed to increased customer satisfaction in the Volvo brand.

With registration commencing from June, the competition is open to all aftermarket professionals within the Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses global service network. The competition starts in September with three rounds of theoretical questions, in which teams are required to complete in their workshops.

Following these three rounds, the best performing teams will be selected to qualify for the semi-finals (Asia Finals) in Bangkok in April 2016. From there, the winning team in Asia will proceed to the World Finals, which is set to take place in June 2016 at Volvo’s birthplace and home in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The 2015-2016 VISTA edition will see participation from approximately 200 employees comprising Technicians, Administrators and Parts Personnel from 13 service outlets (both owned dealers and private dealers) throughout Malaysia and Singapore. These participants will work in groups of three or four, to compete for a place in the Asia Finals.

“At Volvo, we do everything we can to inspire our customers all around the world – from building quality and technologically sound trucks to offering outstanding aftermarket service. This is because satisfied customers are key to making Volvo the number one brand in Malaysia’s commercial vehicle segment. Our VISTA Championships sets us firmly on that path and it achieves everything in a single competition,” Nilsson further commented.

VISTA is a global competition for all aftersales employees within the Volvo Trucks' and Volvo Buses' global service network. What originally started in 1957 as a competition exclusively for Volvo technicians in Sweden, has since grown to become an international biennial event, and the largest competition for aftermarket personnel in the world. VISTA 2012-2013 involved 93 countries all over the globe, 17,000 dedicated workshop professionals, 4,471 highly motivated teams, and millions of training hours.

PRESS RELEASE

Volvo Trucks Launches Fast Track Service to Boost Customer Ownership Experience

Shah Alam, 28 January 2015 – Volvo Trucks Malaysia (Volvo) has upped the ante in customer service
enhancement with the launch of Fast Track Service facility at its flagship Shah Alam dealership - designed to
increase efficiency for its customers by enabling quicker turnaround in truck repair. This latest move by the
global commercial vehicle manufacturer follows a string of dealership expansions and refurbishments under
the company’s network development strategy aimed at amplifying customer benefits and expanding the
value and experience of truck ownership for its customers.

Volvo’s Fast Track Service comprises of four dedicated bays or fast track lanes which are specially designed and allocated to undertake minor repair work of trucks with a duration of two hours or less. Thus, customers with trucks that require minimal repair or service do not need to waste time waiting in line with other trucks that may need more complex diagnosing and longer repair time.

Mats Nilsson, Managing Director, Volvo Malaysia said, “Volvo fully understands that efficient uptime of trucks is a mission critical to our customers’ business vitality and productivity. As a leading player in the commercial transportation sector, we strive to provide superior aftermarket services by constantly creating innovative solutions for our customers’ progress.”

A special Fast Track Service team comprising a group of highly-trained and skilled technicians and service
advisors has been tasked to ensure that the customers’ truck issues are attended to promptly. The team will
also see to an efficient scheduling of repair work, pre-diagnosing of problems, high quality repair and
management of smooth operational work flow in all the four bays, all to reduce waiting time whilst keeping
the regular bays available for trucks that need more attention and longer repair.

The Fast Track Service bookings must be made at least 48 working hours in advance in order for the
specialized team to pre-diagnose and prepare parts and tools for immediate repair of the affected trucks.

Gunasekaran Muthu, General Manager, Central Region, Volvo Malaysia commented, “Pre-diagnosis during
bookings helps speed the process as the team is able to determine the parts and tools needed way in
advance, thus creating efficiency and reducing wasted time at the workshops.”

“With a short and fixed time of maximum two hours to service or repair the trucks, our customers can plan
their truck stops and driver roster more effectively as compared to them not knowing when their trucks will be ready to hit the roads again. And in that two hours, drivers can wait comfortably at our drivers’ lounge and enjoy some beverages there,” said Gunasekaran.

“However, should unexpected problems be detected and which may require more than two hours’ of repair
time, we will inform the respective customer and reallocate the repair work to the regular bay to avoid
disruption to the Fast Track Service lanes,” Gunasekaran further added.

“We decided to introduce the Fast Track Service as a value-added service which directly respond to our
customers’ increasing need to improve and maintain uptime as the logistics and haulage industry continues
to burgeon. For now, this service is only available in our Shah Alam dealership where there is a high
concentration of trucks coming in as the location is close to the ports. In time to come, we may extend this
service to our other dealership locations across the country,” said Nilsson.

Nilsson also shared that this latest service will also improve the company’s workshop utilization and
productivity, and over time increases its revenue on parts and labour as a result of expected higher turnover
of fast moving parts.

The four-lane Fast Track Service facility can repair up to a maximum of 16 trucks per day. For urgent cases
only, bookings may be accepted a day prior and work hours may be extended to accommodate more trucks.

Other services complimenting the Fast Track Service include a brake testing facility located just next to the
lanes. Customers are advised to make early booking by calling 1-300-808-108.

Fast Track Service opens from Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 6.00pm (excluding public holidays) and accepts all Volvo truck models and variants.

Truck News: Volvo Trucks Opens Newly Upgraded Dealership in Sibu & a bit on the Volvo FM for logging

Volvo Trucks Malaysia has officially opened its newly refurbished and enhanced dealership in Sibu, Sarawak last weekend.  As such, Volvo Trucks now offer more complete transport solutions to its customers over there. The Sarawak market isn't necessarily small as Sibu itself is currently the second highest revenue collector after the central region of Peninsular Malaysia in terms of parts sale for them.

The Volvo Trcuks dealership is situated at a strategic location along the main transport flow and the Rejang river barge. The facility also boasts a complete Volvo customer experience as driver waiting lounge, free wireless internet access, reading materials and complimentary beverages are all part of the company’s complete offering of aftermarket experience.

This enhancement is part of Volvo Trucks RM75 million investment over the next few years to upgrade its services in Malaysia. Some think that the commercial industry isn't as enjoyable as passenger cars, but the numbers actually tell you otherwise. And these days have you really taken a look at the trucks plying the Malaysian roads? Some are technically interesting beasts in my opinion.

PRESS RELEASE

Volvo Trucks Opens Newly Upgraded Dealership in Sibu

Dealership relocation and upgrading a continuous part of Volvo Malaysia’s RM75 million investments earmarked for network expansion in Malaysia
Staff of Volvo Sibu and management of Volvo Malaysia

SIBU, Sarawak, 13 January 2015 – Volvo Trucks Malaysia officially opened its newly-refurbished and enhanced dealership in a new location in the East Malaysian town of Sibu, Sarawak, over the weekend.

The opening of the dealership underlined Volvo Trucks’ commitment in expanding its offering of total transport solutions to current and potential customers with business operations that ply the areas of East Malaysia. This strategic move also attests the importance of Sibu to Volvo Trucks as it is currently the second highest revenue contributor after the central region of West Malaysia in terms of parts sale.

Mr Mats Nilsson, Managing Director of Volvo Malaysia described the opening as an important event that heralds another key milestone for the brand.

He said, “The opening of our new Sibu dealership is part of our RM75 million investment which has been earmarked for upgrading of our dealerships across Malaysia. It reflects our continued business commitment in network development strategy which is in line with our corporate direction to increase customer satisfaction and strengthen relationship through higher efficiency and shorter wait time.”

“As a leader in the heavy duty commercial vehicle segment in Malaysia, we need to constantly elevate our service offerings to not just meet but exceed our customers’ expectations for aftermarket support. We achieved a stellar performance last year, where we invoiced 424 trucks, an increase of 29% from the previous year. We believe that with the right strategy and investment in place, we will continue to forge ahead with higher success in the near future,” added Mr Nilsson.

East Malaysia has been an important market for Volvo Trucks and over the past several years, its presence and customer base have increased. The company continues to see many growth opportunities in tandem with economic developments, and is confident that the relocation and upgrading of its Sibu dealership is timely and strategic in capturing further growth.

“We have six dealerships in East Malaysia and our commitment to our customers is that wherever they are in Malaysia, our team of skilled technicians will be there to assist and solve their problems. We understand that ensuring uptime of vehicles is important to them and we believe that they will appreciate and deepen their trust and confidence in us as we continuously up the ante in quality service offerings”, added Mr Nilsson.

Now operating in a standalone building with a built-up area of over 3,752 sq. metres (40,370 sq. feet) – a significant upgrade in terms of space and facilities as compared to a shop lot unit it previously occupied - the new facility is a 2S service centre that has eight workshop stations, a wash bay and the latest tools and equipment for truck diagnosis, service and repairs. With this new facility, there are now additional workshops set up to diagnose vehicles and conduct quality repair.

Mr Alex Yong, General Manager for East Malaysia, Volvo Malaysia said, “The eight-bay facility will allow us to capture more workshop volume, including additional services such as accident repair for trucks and trailers. This Sibu dealership upgrade serves to standardise Volvo Malaysia’s network of dealerships in accordance with Volvo’s Dealer Operation Standards (DOS), provide additional services and increase productivity and efficiency. Overall, it will improve the Volvo truck ownership experience for our customers.”

“In addition, this move also provides a safer and more productive working environment for our employees which will in turn reduce downtime and reflect positively on the improvement of service. Customers can now enjoy improved high-standard service and facilities in Sibu effective immediately,” Mr Yong further shared.

The Sibu new dealership now also has better workflow and office ergonomics, and comes complete with a redesigned layout that corresponds with Volvo’s Corporate Identity. It also offers a more comfortable environment for drivers and the mechanics at work.

Truck drivers would be pleased to know that the dealership is situated at a convenient and strategic location along the main transport flow and the Rejang river barge. Additionally, the facility also boasts a complete Volvo customer experience as driver waiting lounge, free wireless internet access, reading materials and complimentary beverages are all part of the company’s complete offering of aftermarket experience.

According to Volvo Malaysia, the investment will boost customer confidence and enable the company to provide wider service coverage along the transport flow from Kuching to Bintulu. Volvo Malaysia currently has eleven dealerships across Malaysia – five in Peninsular Malaysia and six in East Malaysia.

Trucking news: Scania Malaysia launches the Scania Assistance Service and Scania Fleet Management System

6:47 AM 0

Today I was at Scania Malaysia for the launch of the Scania Assistance Service and Scania Fleet Management System. These are ownership solutions for better profitability for Scania bus and truck operators here in Malaysia. Of course, I get to view some nice machines too. In the heavy duty sort of scale that is. I was busy taking admiring the huge Garrett turbo fitted to the Scania bus chassis to the left of the photo above folks.

Anyway, before I get  sidetracked, the new Scania Assistance service is an operator based call centre that operates round the clock and allows Scania's customers to always be in contact with Scania when the need arises. This service is now based on Scania's global standards and this latest call centre system allows Scania to track and follow up on the status of a customer's case from start to finish. It will keep the customer informed on what is going on with, say a stranded vehicle and what are the folks at Scania doing about it.

The Scania Assistance is supported by a team of customer service personnel, a fleet of standby service vans with trained technicians who can connect with Scania's network of workshops which can assist any Scania customer in need even in difficult to reach areas.

The Scania Assistance number is 1800-08-8500 (or +603 5590 9077 for international calls – for those travelling to Thailand or Singapore probably) and every new Scania truck, bus or coach chassis now comes with two years of free Scania Assistance.

Aside from the Scania Assistance, Scania also provides the Scania Fleet Management System. This is a set of services that connects the Scania vehicles with the customer's office as well as Scania via a communicator device (shown above - the little box in the middle of the photo is essentially a GPS packet data device, connected to Scania's servers in Sweden and therefore allows global tracking even though most of the local customers would travel within Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand). Scania customers will be able to retreive vehicle data, fleet position and also review the driver's performance (fuel consumption, CO2 levels, idle time, brake, average speed etc). By being able to peruse through the data, the customers can make decisions to improve the productivity of their fleet.

During the briefing, we were shown what Scania Fleet Management can do. It basically can allow Scania vehicle operators to take control of their vehicles and actually see what their drivers are doing to their vehicles. You can tell if a driver is driving uneconomically or idling the vehicle longer than usual or even braking harder than supposed to. With supporting data it allows the fleet manager to actually coach the drivers on better driving habits which will in turn save fuel consumption as well as wear and tear on the vehicles. The demonstration included a Scania prime mover which was driven around the area surrounding the Scania Headquarters and we could see it being tracked by the system doing so. There was also a mock driver and driver trainer discussion informing on where the driver had driven badly or otherwise.
"Hello kawan...you have 2,000Nm torque in the Scania truck of yours. Why aren't you lighting up the tyres at the traffic lights here, here and here?" Questioned the driver trainer. That would be the dialog in a motorhead's dream of course.

These two systems provide with a pretty good solution for those operating commercial vehicles. According to the Managing Director of Scania Southeast Asia, Mr James Armstrong (below), “Our customers' operations are at the center of the entire value chain. Scanias wide range or quality products and services are constantly improving and optimised for our customer's needs.”

“This is Scania's total solutions approach to help our customers achieve the best profitability.” He added.

Of course, these systems are not without a price but the increased productivity may actually over ride any extra costs. The Scania Fleet Management pricing is reasonable where all new vehicles ordered from the 1st of December 2014 will come with the Scania Communicator built into the vehicles and will get a 10 year subscription of the monitoring package. Current vehicles can also be retrofitted for a sum of RM3,100. One can also upgrade to the Control Package at a cost of RM136 per vehicle per month.

The difference between the two is that the reporting in the Control Package is more detailed (of course) in that it provides more detailed reports. It even includes traffic lights report, fleet position and even geo fencing (which allows customers to have an alarm when a vehicle enters or leaves a predetermined zone). There are tons more functions and stuff about the Scania Fleet Management system. I am just skimming the surface of it actually. For more detailed information, just head on over to the Scania Malaysia website.

From what I can see the Scania Fleet Management system works quite well. And coupled with the Scania Assistance service a customer should be able to maximise their fleet of vehicles in any circumstances and plan for any contingencies. From a layman's point of view, it is this sort of value added services that make the Swedish trucking industry stay way ahead of their competitors.

Trucking News: Volvo Trucks Announces the Fuelwatch Challenge 2014 Champion

6:38 AM 0

One must be aware that unlike the 'more interesting stuff' like supercars, sports cars and even any type of cars, trucks (or lorries) and their very real and human drivers are the heartbeat of our nation, transporting what we need throughout the country day in and day out. This is why we here at Motoring-Malaysia.blogspot.com continue to bring in trucking news, day in and day out.

Volvo Trucks Announces the Fuelwatch Challenge 2014 Champion!

The Challenge aims to build the overall value entity of Malaysian truck drivers;

Winner to represent Malaysia at the Fuelwatch APAC and World Finals in Sweden

Subang Jaya, 9 June 2014 – Going beyond the durability and technology of the trucks, Volvo Malaysia began its search for Malaysia’s most fuel efficient driver two months ago through its annual nationwide fuel-saving competition, Fuelwatch Challenge 2014. Today, the search concludes with the crowning of Malaysia’s most fuel efficient truck driver at a Gala Dinner held at Holiday Inn to celebrate the occasion.

Recognising the contribution of truck drivers to the whole nation, the Fuelwatch Challenge 2014 kicked off
with six preliminary rounds across the country covering Shah Alam where it was launched, Johor Bahru, Prai, Kuantan, Kuching, and Bintulu.

Close to 800 truckers participated in the challenge where they underwent a series of written tests on driver’s
training to qualify for the semi-finals. Out of this total, only 20 participants were shortlisted for a real drive challenge in the semi-finals, where three of the most skilled drivers proceeded to compete in the finals.

In the finals, the champion was selected based on the lowest percentage of fuel consumption within the time limit set, taking into account all the applied safe driving techniques. Clocking the lowest fuel consumption in a 40-kilometre drive challenge in the final stage, En Ahmad Bin Othman from Logistik Petikemas Sdn Bhd in Prai emerged as the champion of this year’s Fuelwatch Challenge. He achieved a strong result of 2.52 kilometres using only 1 litre of fuel driving a Volvo truck with a 40-footer container carrying 20 tonnes of load. As the national champion and the next Fuelwatch ambassador, En Ahmad Bin Othman is set to represent Malaysia at the Fuelwatch APAC and World Finals 2014, to be held in Volvo’s home country in Gothenburg, Sweden later this September.

“Prior to Fuelwatch, driving a truck has just been a daily task for me. It was just a job to feed my family. Now I know that driving is about so much more after gaining these useful knowledge and experience. The
challenge has taught me a great deal about the efficient use of fuel and the impact of driving behaviours on both the business and the environment. Winning the Malaysian chapter has given me the inspiration to improve my skills and push my capabilities further. I really look forward to the challenge in Sweden as it’ll be a great experience and learning opportunity for me,” said En Ahmad Bin Othman.

Close behind the trails of Volvo’s new Fuelwatch champion are the second and third place winners from Shah Alam - En. Zaril Nizam Bin Zakaria from Linfox Transport (M) Sdn Bhd (second place) and En. Azrul
Haiza Bin Abdul Aziz from Vertex Mission Sdn Bhd (third place).

An annual event over the last five years, the Volvo Fuelwatch Challenge has helped put Malaysian truckers
on the global map, pitting local champions against the world’s best truckers. The Fuelwatch Challenge is about achieving maximum fuel efficiency through a comprehensive approach incorporating vehicle optimisation, maintenance, performance monitoring, safety measures and driver behaviour through a nationwide competition format.

The event was attended by Guest-of-Honor, En. A. Halim Husain, Head – Operations Group, Suruhanjaya
Pengangkutan Awam Darat (SPAD), who expressed his wish to see more companies in the private sector
follow the footsteps of Volvo Trucks Malaysia and spearhead initiatives such as Fuelwatch to help shape a
stronger trucking community.

Managing Director of Volvo Malaysia, Mr Mats Nilsson said, “The Fuelwatch Challenge has proven to be one of our successful annual signature events. We have seen increased participation every single year. We had about 200 participants in the first year, which increased to more than 300 in the following year, 500 last year and 800 this year.”

“Beyond the popularity of the challenge, what we really strive to achieve is to inspire a positive change in truck drivers’ role by empowering them to adopt fuel efficient and safe driving behaviour. Trucker drivers are movers of the economy and we want them to take pride and responsibility in their job” added Mr Nilsson.

This year’s Fuelwatch Challenge was also paired with the Volvo Driver Development Programme (DDP) which is currently offered free to Volvo’s customers. Given the importance of the role of truck drivers to the economy, the DDP provides an additional and more in-depth training platform to impart useful, comprehensive and hands-on approach to building well-rounded Malaysian truck drivers and overall fleet management.

The Fuelwatch Challenge is endorsed by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) of the Malaysia Ministry of
Transport (MOT). All information, tips, and know-hows about Fuelwatch are available to the Malaysian truck drivers through the Globe Truckers Club. Free membership to the club is opened to ALL truck drivers in Malaysia with a valid truck license Class E and/or GDL (bersendi) license.
