Tesla Model S maintains high resale value

According to a study conducted by iSeeCars, the S model of Tesla retains its value 2 times more than a conventional or an electric car. According to this study, the average depreciation rate for electric vehicles is 56.6% versus 38.2% for an average car using petrol.

Also earlier studies have shown that in general, electric cars are underestimated more quickly than common petrol-powered vehicles. However, we must bear in mind that electric cars are being underestimated more quickly because resale prices are calculated as well as the state and local credits applied to these vehicles when purchased for the first time.

Ly suggests that obsolescence may also play a role in the high depreciation rate of electric vehicles:
"Because electric vehicle technology is changing rapidly, obsolescence also plays a role in their dramatic devaluation as well as consumer stress and the lack of public infrastructure to charge them."

However, things would have been different if electric cars did not have the extra credit and if petrol-powered cars were sold at their real cost, since their impact on health and the environment had been included in their price.

Either way, it is very likely soon the devaluation of gasoline cars to increase compared to electric vehicles. In a few years no one will want to buy petrol-powered vehicles and they will know that no one is going to want to buy their used petrol car in 3-5 years destroying its resale value.
