Shell Launches the Shell V-Power LEGO Collection - Now Available at Shell Stations throughout Malaysia

5:36 AM 0

#ReadySetBuild - Shell officially launched its new Shell V-Power LEGO Collection at Sunway Pyramid today. This is an exclusive range of small LEGO sets that are based around Ferrari and Shell respectively. The collection was created in collaboration with Ferrari and the LEGO group and introduces six new models - four iconic Ferrari cars (with a tiny pull-back motor in them), a Finish Line and Podium set which includes a LEGO minifigure (minifig), and a set of the Shell Station modelled after the one at Ferrari's Foriano Circuit - Ferrari's private racetrack in Maranello. The Shell Station set comes with a Shell Scientist minifig.

Tuan HJ Azman Ismail (pictured above, in the middle), Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd said that Shell are excited that through the Shell V-Power LEGO Collection, they can bring people together. He said that "Motorists, race fans, toy enthusiasts, children and adults alike (will) make Shell a happy pit stop for all. We believe that the simple act of building can be more meaningful and fun if shared with others. Our hope is for our customers to not simply build the Shell V-Power collection but form closer bonds in the process"

He further added that many Malaysians had played with LEGO bricks when they were young. " So why not relive the good old days with friends? With the school holidays fast approaching, perhaps parents can spend more time with their children by building Ferrari collectibles and LEGO playsets" he added.

So how do you go about getting these unique, LEGO sets? You need a minimum purchase of RM40 of Shell V-Power and Shell FuelSave fuel or purchase a 4litre pack of Shell Helix motor oil. Once that purchase is made, you will be able to purchase one of the six LEGO model sets which are priced at RM9.90 and RM13.90. It is RM9.90 if you pump RM40 worth of V-Power 97 or V-Power Racing or buy 4liters of Shell Helix HX5 or 4 liters of HX7. You will have to fork out RM13.90 for each LEGO set if you pump RM40 worth of Shell FuelSave 95 or Shell Diesel.

There is also a limited edition Shell Tanker for RM9.90 with every RM40 pump of Shell V-Power or if you purchase either 4liters of Shell Helix HX5 and HX7. You can however get the Shell Tanker free if you purchase the 4 liter pack of Shell Helix Ultra engine oil. The Shell Tanker should only be available after the 13th of November 2015.

Speaking about the LEGO model sets release dates the models were made available from the 1st of November 2015. The first Shell V-Power LEGO collectible sets have been released so far and new models will be released every Sunday - from the 1st of November 2015 to the 13th December 2015. It would be available at all Shell stations for purchase until 31st January 2016 or while stocks lasts.

Customers are also encouraged to share on Social Media (on INSTAGRAM) photos of their Shell V-Power LEGO models and their building moments (family bonding memories, friends building the sets. etc) by using the hashtag #ReadySetBuild and #my to the photos. There may be some interesting events coming on soon with regards to the photo sharing activities, so stay tuned folks.

Aside from the above, Shell is also inviting everyone to visit the Shell V-Power LEGO activity centres at Sunway Pyramid, Petaling Jaya on the 5th to 8th November 2015 and at the Gurney Plaza, Penang on the 12th to 15th November 2015 where they will get a chance to view half sized (1:2 scale) LEGO brick based Ferrari models as well as the full sized, 1:1 scale Ferrari LEGO model car. The half sized cars are larger versions of the four Ferrari cars which you can buy - the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Ferrari F138 F1 car, the Ferrari 250GTO and the Ferrari 512S. But I like the full sized LEGO model of the Ferrari F1 car. It uses LEGO bricks for the body and aero bits, with a replica of the carbon fiber driver's tub, real suspension parts sticking out of the LEGO shell. Pretty interesting. Since it took 214,950 LEGO bricks and about 810 days to build.

There will also be roving trucks that will bring the Shell V-Power LEGO experience to the public with the life sized LEGO model of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Car too. The Truck will display the car in the Klang Valley, Ipoh, Melaka and other seclected locations throughout Malaysia.

More information of the Shell V-Power LEGO collection as well as upcoming activities pertaining to this promotion could be found at www.shell.com.my/lego.

The All New Alfa Romeo Giulia...and the falling Ringgit

9:01 AM 0

Alfa Romeo has just launched the Giulia. It looks like a cross between something German and a  Lexus RC-F matched to a wonderful looking slant eyed front end. The German I am mentioning is the BMW 3 Series as if you took a look at the C pillar/rear doors, that BMW-ish Hoffmeister kink is there. I think it does look all angry and all. Like how an Alfa should be. But I think it could look a little more adventurous than what it is today.

But that noise. Like any V6 Alfa Romeo that came before it, the new Giulia has an engine that snorts like a hound from hell. Or a trumpet from heaven. Your pick. I don't care. It sounds simply fabulous from the video I am sharing with you here. The Giulia Quadrifoglio version which you see in the vid, has an all-aluminum 510 HP 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 tuned by Ferrari engineers and most probably based on the engine that is fitted in the Maserati Ghibli. As is tha chassis, a Ghibli made into a Giulia. .0 - 100kmh in 3.9 seconds.

The main problem I have with this car is that there is no official Alfa Romeo distributors here. The second problem is that the V6 sounds so great that even if there were an agent here it will cost RM450,000 minimum. I think it will cost this much because it is an Alfa based on a Maserati. The Ghibli sells here from around RM538,000. The third problem is that since it is based on the Maserati, servicing one could also be Maserati prices. This means that if you have been a fan of Alfa Romeo in Malaysia, these new Alfa Romeo are not the 'affordable' machines that most can afford.

Anyway, we have another problem. The falling Ringgit. Instead of costing RM450,000 as I am predicting, the Alfa Romeo Giulia may cost a billion Ringgit. Like the currency of Zimbabwe. Where a whole chicken can cost a truckload of paper. This is what happens when foreign investment is pulled out due to lack of confidence with the Government of Malaysia. Or the country as a whole. Why is it that way? A lot of nonsense but mostly RM42billion worth of 1MDB. The reason is simple, a government has been cheated or duped out of 'investing' billions of Ringgit. How much confidence would investors have if a government can be seen to have been cheated by some people?

Whether this is the whole truth, half truth or lies. It does not matter. Confidence levels get hit and right now people are pulling their investments out of Malaysia which is why the Ringgit is losing its value. When there is less interest in a country, the currency demand is less. Oversupply with little demand creates a deflation in value of the currency. But for most Malaysians, expect inflation when buying imported products. Could someone wake up the powers that be so that affirmative action is taken more quickly instead of caring more about dress codes in Government buildings and pasar malam? Wake up lah. Heads should be rolling. Instead of keeping inept people and getting them to try solve the problem, call in some professional clean up crews will you?

And folks. The mismanagement of funds will actually curtail my desire for an Alfa Romeo Giulia. Even though my loins ache for it so badly, that ache may never be satisfied. Aside from the first three reasons of course!

NAZA Italia launches the New Ferrari 488 GTB in Malaysia

5:54 AM 0
L to R - Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, Group Executive Chairman & Group CEO of NAZA World Group of Companies, Mr. Dieter Knechtel, Managing Director of Ferrari Far East,   Mr. Simon Inglefield, Head of Sales ASEAN, Ferrari Far East,  Mr. David Hector Ratnaike, Senior Vice President 2 of 4-Wheels Division, NAZA World Group of Companies

The Ferrari 488 GTB was launched to the media earlier today. The Malaysian launch actually comes just a few months after the international launch at the recent Geneva Motor Show. It actually goes to show that Malaysia is actually an important market for the Prancing Horse.

The 488, the replacement for the 458 Italia is the first of the new breed of turbocharged Ferrari (not the first - we had the 288 GTO and the F40 prior to this) that is in line with the latest emission controls and legislations that require downsizing when it comes to engine capacity. Anyway, downsizing here means a smaller 3.9liter V8 compared to the outgoing 458 Italia which had a 4.5liter normally aspirated V8 engine (562hp and 540Nm torque). It however makes the use of force induction which enables it to have 661hp and 730Nm of torque. These figures actually eclipse the magnificent limited run Enzo Ferrari from 2003 - 651hp and 661Nm torque.

That was what a Ferrari hypercar achieved back then. Look what slightly over a decade of development has achieved. The car in the flesh, well metal is a beauty. An evolution in terms of styling compared to the 458, but underneath, Ferrari have had a whole lot of work done on it. The engine and chassis tech are truly impressive as always.

Anyway, let's show some figures. It will cost over RM2.1 million by rough estimates (after taking into account the introductory base price of RM1,068,800.00 before options, duties and other taxes). Naza Italia, who are official importers of Ferrari here in Malaysia have mentioned that they have already twenty (20) bookings of the 488 GTB in hand which is about the Malaysian allocation for at least two years. They are also expecting a few more when potential customers view the car. There are those who will want to see what they are buying. This isn't that surprising with the number of Ferrari I see on the roads in and around Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur these days.

PRESS RELEASE AND SPECIFICATIONS

NAZA Italia debuts the New Ferrari 488 GTB

Kuala Lumpur, 16 June 2015 – NAZA Italia, official importer of the Ferrari brand in Malaysia, presented the Ferrari 488 GTB to the Malaysian market today, in a launch ceremony held at its newly-renovated NAZA Italia showroom. The Ferrari 488 GTB’s Malaysian debut comes just a few months after the model’s International Premiere in Geneva.

Present at the official launch ceremony were Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin (Group Executive Chairman & Group CEO of NAZA World Group of Companies), Mr. Dieter Knechtel (Managing Director of Ferrari Far East), Mr. David Hector Ratnaike (Senior Vice President 2 of 4-Wheels Division, NAZA World Group of Companies) and Mr Wan Ahmad (Vice President 1 of NAZA Italia Sdn Bhd).

“The Ferrari 488 GTB provides a breathtaking 661bhp – the highest specific power output of any road-going Ferrari. Exceptionally powerful with greater fuel economy, this model is bound to be a new Malaysian favourite,” said Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, Group Executive Chairman & Group CEO, NAZA World Group of Companies.

The twin-turbocharged V8 Ferrari 488 GTB sets a new benchmark for the sports car sector. Forty years from the launch of Ferrari’s iconic first-ever mid-rear-engined V8 berlinetta, the 308, the Ferrari 488 GTB opens a new chapter in the history of cars with this particular architecture.

“Available at the introductory base price excluding duty and options of RM 1,068,800.00 and with the interest it has sparked worldwide, we are confident that the Ferrari 488 GTB will turbocharge its way into the hearts of Malaysian Ferraristi,” stated Mr. David Hector Ratnaike, Senior Vice President 2 of 4-Wheels Division, NAZA World Group of Companies.

Credit for this achievement must go to the Ferrari 488 GTB’s revolutionary proprietary solutions which deliver a car at the top of its class in terms of power output (670 cv) with engine and command response times of just 0.8 and 0.06 seconds respectively. Significantly, however, sophisticated dynamic vehicle controls make this massive power completely controllable even on the limit by drivers of all abilities, resulting in the unique driving pleasure that only a Ferrari can deliver.

Ferrari drew extensively too on its experience in both Formula One and endurance racing, bringing to the road the technology that delivered victory in two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the title in the WEC (World Endurance Championship). Also pivotal was the XX programme in which Ferrari’s technicians have developed a unique knowledge of the dynamic behaviour of extreme cars driven by non-professional drivers.

The 488 in the car’s moniker indicates the engine’s unitary displacement, while the GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta, a reference to its deep roots in Ferrari history.

Designed by the Ferrari Style Centre, the Ferrari 488 GTB’s sculptural forms are completely new. They accentuate the car’s sportiness yet retain the classically clean, pure lines typical of Ferrari’s legendary styling. The seamless interweaving of form and function is clear in every detail, in fact. Certain design elements are also obvious nods to the past, not least the 308 GTB-inspired styling of the flanks.

The extreme power required by the car is delivered by the new 3902 cm3 turbo engine which is coupled with a seven-gear F1 dual-clutch gearbox featuring Variable Boost Management which optimally distributes torque (a maximum 760 Nm in seventh gear). The Ferrari 488 GTB guarantees exuberant performance that is absolutely exploitable to the fullest regardless of driving conditions and is accompanied by a deep, seductive soundtrack, the signature of all Ferrari engines.

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s revolutionary aerodynamics incorporate patented solutions, such as the blown rear spoiler, as well as innovative features like the 458 GT-derived aerodynamic underbody with vortex generators.  The result is a new efficiency record for a Ferrari (E=1.67). Downforce increases to 325 kg at 250 km/h, thanks in part to active aerodynamic devices which reduce drag whilst simultaneously generating downforce when required.

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s dynamic vehicle controls have also been further evolved. It sports a new version of the Side Slip Control System (SSC2) which, aside from just integrating with the car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, now also controls the active dampers. This renders the Ferrari 488 GTB’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable, so that less expert drivers can enjoy its potential to the fullest, resulting in an astonishingly engaging driving experience.

The Ferrari 488 GTB makes its debut in a new Rosso Corsa Met livery with black and red technical fabric cabin trim.

Want to buy a full sized luxury car? Here are some pointers......

8:16 PM 0
A Jaguar XJ - like no other car....

If you had money here in Malaysia what would you go out and buy? These days I actually believe in owning luxury personally. I do get to drive nice and fancy cars some times but owning one has always been a dream. So how do you actually choose a premium car of your dreams?

For me it is simple. Heritage, refinement and then ask yourself what Jeremy Clarkson would say about a purchase. And speaking about Jeremy Clarkson, I am sad to hear that the chap got booted out of TopGear all because of a 'fracas' with a producer. I also hear he is taking his co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond with him and they may soon have their own show without any association with BBC and of course TopGear. Well, good for them. The BBC is in some ways like our RTM. More liberal but still a little fuddy duddy as it does belong to the government of England.

This....is actually...
...this underneath it all

Anyway, as for the criteria of 'refinement' in a premium car I'd like it to be quiet, soaks up bumps and potholes with ease so that my daily commute to and from work is as stress free as possible. I want to be cocooned from the outside world as much as possible. That loud exhaust from a kapchai? What exhaust? That lorry belching smoke? What smoke? That stretch of terrible road that MBPJ has not patched up because the council members think too highly of themselves? What pothole?

So this would lead you to buy certain cars that actually cost over RM150,000 in Malaysia. No mean feat as most of us here don't actually earn like what those people doing KPIs for the government want their bosses to think we do. Do you actually believe that the GDP per capita of Malaysia is over USD3,000? Well, these jokers in the government do. But this is besides the point. The point of this article is to explain to you what premium or luxury car you need to buy with your money once you hit that certain level in life. No. A Volkswagen is just entry level premium here. Not a luxury car okay.

So next we have heritage. You would like to own a car that has years of history behind it. This means years of history building luxury and not just run of the mill cars. You could say this means you can avoid Ford, Honda, Toyota, Fiat and a whole lot of others. You could go ahead with Bentley, Rolls Royce, BMW, Audi, Ferrari, Maserati and Mercedes Benz. Or could you?

Now we head over to the 'what would Jeremy Clarkson say' criteria. Quite simple. If you bought a Bentley Flying Spur you'd know underneath it is actually an Audi A8 re-engineered to be even more luxurious. If you bought an A8 you'd know that if could be a re-engineered Volkswagen Phaeton. If you bought a Continental GT it could be a re-engineered RS6 which could be a re-engineered CC. If you went and bought a Rolls Royce underneath it all are BMW 7 series parts too. So in this case it would be wise if you bought a Volkswagen Passat or a Paethon instead of an Audi or  a Bentley? Or would it be better to buy the Bentley and know deep down inside that you actually bought a very tarted up Volkswagen or Audi? But if you bought that Audi would you think that deep down inside you know that Audi cold do better as they've engineered Audi platforms into Lamborghinis and Bentleys.

It is the same if you went and bought a Lexus as Toyota is all about making things efficient and cost effective. Your Lexus is actually a Toyota in makeup. Or cakeup as it wears a heck of a lot to disguise it. The same goes to Infiniti, which is worse. It has no heritage whatsoever and comes from a Nissan that is not a GT-R. Even large premium Volvos still run Ford's EUCD platform for the moment. So it's a Ford underneath it all.

So what does that leave us with? Not BMW as they build the Rolls Royce and you'd rather have a Rolls Royce with BMW parts in it. And that BMW 7 series could have been built better if not for Rolls Royce being above it. Buy a Rolls Royce? You could, but people may just call you 'Your Majesty' if you're sitting at the back or 'driver' if you're driving it. Unless its a 2 door version. Then you're just driving a very expensive car with BMW parts in it.

Aston Martin you say? Well, their current platform architecture harks back from the days when they were under Ford's premier automotive group. They're considered small and in fact, the next generation of cars will be running Mercedes-Amg engines.

Of course you could just buy a Maserati, as they actually use Ferrari underpinings to build them. Hey, isn't that better? I would have to say that this is the best in platform sharing. Both are incredible cars which have heritage that I wouldn't mind being a part of. I suppose a Maserati or a Ferrari would be nice. They actually don't share parts with Fiat. In fact even Alfa Romeo is reported to share parts with Maserati in its new rear wheel drive chassis. This I would feel happy to own as I get something extremely bespoke unlike the others mentioned above.

And so we now end it with cars that are actually shared with nothing else but itself, The first being Mercedes Benz. I mean seriously, when you buy a Mercedes Benz it is a Mercedes Benz. These days it may be Mercedes Benz, Mercedes AMG or Mercedes Maybach, but it's actually a bloody Mercedes Benz underneath it all. Amazing isn't it? So buy a Mercedes Benz if you want that luxury car of yours.

The second one is actually Jaguar. The aluminium chassis XJ series launched in 2009 has their own bits and bobs. They may be owned by TATA group but their cars are fully engineered in the UK. Buy one and you know that it does not share major components with a lesser brand. A good thing yes?

So there you have it. Buy either a Jaguar, a Maserati, a Ferrari or a Mercedes Benz  if you want a proper luxury car.

Hope this doesn't mess up your luxury car buying dreams.

Sunday Car Porn: Light years away from the current crop of Ferrari - The 365 GTB4 'Daytona'

7:56 AM 0

The Ferrari 365 GTB4 'Daytona' is my favourite Ferrari of all time. It is light years away from the current crop of Ferrari with their cutting edge technology and wind tunnel sculpted looks. This was purity of design. But in 1968 this was considered a milestone in what Ferrari claims to be 'extreme high performance front engined sports car'. It was produced from 1968 to 1973.

It had a 4.4liter V12 making 352hp and 431Nm torque. Autocar tested it in 1971 and recorded a 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds, a 0-100 mph time of 12.6 seconds, a standing start quarter mile time of 13.4 seconds at a terminal velocity of 104 mph, and a top speed of 174 mph, a figure that remained as their road test record for a number of years. Remember, this was in the early 1970s.

But to me the Daytona had nothing to do with pure performance (which it no doubt had). It was the styling. The Pininfarina designed body was what I truly adore about this car. It was just an embodiment of power. A long bonnet, a set back cabin and a short abrupt tail basically conveyed a sense of power. It was as if it was all engine and nothing else. And that was partly why it was, and is so beautiful.
