Some tidbits and news on upcoming reviews on a Truck vs a Bus, a Volkswagen Passat and a Jaguar XJ L

6:25 PM 0

As usual I've been busy. Busy with life. I have also decided to clean up my personal Facebook page of all unwanted and negative clutter. Clutter has been mostly political and anyone who irritates the heck out of me. My Facebook feed is now very positive and I only see what I want to see. Clutter and deadweight holds you back. If you want to achieve more in most things you gotta get rid of it. Life is so much  better without idiots.

Most of you would also realise that I am bilingual. I speak and write fluently (or decently well) in English and the Malay language. I also know how to swear and curse in umpteen more languages too. Being bilingual is a good thing, but one of the languages must be English if you want to spread your wings globally. I started writing in English because I wanted a broader audience instead of using my mother tongue. I also had the privilege to write for publications elsewhere aside from Malaysia. One of the great things about the knowledge to converse in English and the internet is that it opened up an avenue and a platform for me to share my thoughts to others through a channel that is easily accessible most of the time. And since English is the most widely used medium in most continents (Mandarin could be the most used language but it isn't used on all continents globally), it is the way to go. Look where English has gotten me. I get to drive nice vehicles most of the time.

Speaking of vehicles, upcoming reviews and articles will include:

A comparison between a bus and a truck - which is actually more pleasurable to drive
This is me driving a Scania prime mover truck at the Sepang F1 Circuit....
...this is the Scania Marcopolo bus that I drove right after the truck. So which is actually more fun to actually punt around at about 80-90kmh?

A review on the Volkswagen Passat B7 - still on sale in Malaysia till the new one arrives. Is it still a worthy drive? Expect this soon folks. (I just need to start putting the words together for this first).

A review of the M.I.6 Director's car - The Jaguar XJ L 2.0 - The (longer) Drive Experience. This is because I did have a go in one earlier but that was a short spin. This would be up sometime next week, in lieu of the latest James Bond movie, Spectre. Why? Jaguar Land Rover vehicles are used extensively in that film as well as the previous one, Skyfall. What better way to celebrate a Bond movie by driving something that was heavily featured in one?

Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore - Champions crowned.

8:51 PM 0

Yesterday, on the 1st of October 2015, a total of 16 finalists from the bus and truck category competed in what Scania believes to be the toughest practical finals that they have organised to date in the Scania Driver Competitions. Eight truck and eight bus drivers duked it out against each other in their respective categories in the Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore and as in any competition, there can be only one winner (for each category of course).

Mr. Saiful Nizam Abd Aziz of Bank Simpanan Nasional was the champion in the bus category whilst Mr. Abdul Aziz Amir of Shaziman Transport Sdn Bhd was crowned champion in the truck category. Each champion took home RM10,000 in cash, a championship trophy and a certificate of achievement. The companies they represented were awarded a RM5,000 worth Scania service voucher.

In order to win, both Saiful Nizam (pictured above holding his trophy) and Abdul Aziz (pictured below) and the other finalists were shortlisted from a total of 1,005 participants during an initial theory submission stage with participants coming from both Malaysian and Singapore. The participation numbers were up by 50%. This meant that there are more commercial drivers aware of such competitions that ultimately equip them with experience, knowledge and a chance to test themselves with each other. In fact, there was a finalist in the bus category, Mr.Mohd Ridzuan Abdul Rahman who entered this competition on his own initiative (which includes time away from work and also money to attend the event). It shows the professionalism and dedication of the people who are actually the backbone of the regional road transport industry.

The Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore finals were held over two days over at the Sepang International Circuit, drivers at the finals had to go through the fuel economy driving test and the defensive driving test on the first day of the finals. The second and final day, they had to go through the 'Knock-the-cone-and-head precision test (where the drivers have to drive and actually touch the cone/head without making it topple over within a specific time) and the 'Boardwalk' obstacle test (reverse slalom through a few cones then reverse whilst ensuring the truck or bus' tyres hit three planks laid out behind the trucks which were staggered to one side one after the other squarely. It was tough, but these finalists are built of tougher material.

Now an event like this would not have been possible with good partnerships and sponsors. Tyre company Michelin Malaysia was the main sponsors and such a driver competition was a great way for Michelin to showcase the capabilities of their tyres in terms of the important stuff like safety, comfort, longevity and fuel economy.

Other official partners include Scania Credit, JKJR (Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya Malaysia), MIROS (Malaysian Instutite of Road Safety) and the Embassy of Sweden (where H.E. Mr Bengt G Carlsson
Ambassador of Sweden graciously attended the prize giving ceremony).

The winner of Scania Southeast Asia Top Team – the team from Scania Singapore

Bukit Jelutong, 1 August – Scania Malaysia hosted the best technical teams from Southeast Asia for a Top Team Competition to help them prepare for the high level competition that they have already qualified for when they head to the regional finals that will take place in Guangzhou, China on 19 September, 2015.

Scania Malaysia’s own Top Team had the opportunity to polish their maintenance and servicing skills in the friendly competition with the teams from Scania Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines that will also be competing in China.

It was an especially valuable experience for Scania’s exclusive authorised dealer Octagon Automobile & Machinery Services of Myanmar and Scania’s authorised dealer BJ Mercantile of The Philippines. It was the first time for both teams to compete against those from outside their own countries.

After receiving an extensive briefing, the teams were tested on their competency to master and develop their skills combining studies, training and teamwork at the competition that was held at the Scania Malaysia facility in Shah Alam.

Each team was tested on its proficiency in the areas of technical competency, ability to analyse problems, learning to delegate responsibility, enhance and cultivate teamwork and foresight in solving problems and overcoming challenges systematically and efficiently.

Consisting of three service personnel, one parts personnel and a service advisor, the teams had to solve a series of challenges and problems involving five components – Theory, Electrical, Transmission, Engine and Suspension.

“The sporting element in the Scania Top Team competition creates excitement in the teams and promotes self-worth and a sense of pride in giving their best always, making them better technicians,” said Finance and Administration Director of Scania Southeast Asia, Ulrika Hellberg

Scania’s customer’s objective is to achieve the best profitability, which is why the competition is based on Scania’s total solutions approach to offering fuel economy, uptime and premium services. The competition rests firmly on the combination of studies with pleasure while having elements of the contest rooted in reality.

“Scania Southeast Asia Top Team Competition brings immense benefits to the participants and subsequently, to Scania customers by providing more effective services. This may help meet the worldwide demand for qualified service workshop staff, especially in Southeast Asia,” added Hellberg.

Team Singapore walked away with the trophy, certificates of participation and a Scania bag and belt, with Team Thailand and Team Myanmar taking second and third place respectively.

Truck and Bus News: MIROS PARTNERS SCANIA AGAIN TO PROMOTE SAFE DRIVING

8:16 AM 0

It is said that good road safety is the result of good road etiquette. Like we recently heard in that latest Spy flick, Kingsmen, where 'Manners Maketh Man'. Which is why well-trained and well behaved drivers are aware of the importance of being safe drivers will practice whenever they are behind the wheel.

One of the agencies in Malaysia that studies and promotes this is the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), they are returning for the second time as a partner to the upcoming 2014/2015 Scania Driver Competitions (SDC) which will be held in October this year.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MIROS PARTNERS SCANIA AGAIN TO PROMOTE SAFE DRIVING

Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam, 7 July – Good road safety is the result of good road etiquette, which is what well-trained drivers who are aware of the importance of being safe drivers will practice whenever they are behind the wheel.
One of the agencies in Malaysia that studies and promotes this is the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), which is returning for the second time as a partner to the Scania Driver Competitions (SDC).

To be held in October this year, the Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore has also successfully retained the endorsement from one of Malaysia’s notable land transport authorities such as the Road Safety Department (JKJR).

MIROS conducts high impact research that will be translated into road safety policies, develops national objectives, enhances and increases road safety knowledge and serves as a centre providing consultation and advice on road safety issues.

Both MIROS and the SDC advocate a safe, fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly drive that benefits the driver, fleet operators and everyone else on the road, with the focus on the driver as the single most important asset for safety; as well as profitability when it comes to commercial vehicles.
“Safe-driving is good for the safety of other drivers, good for passengers, good for maintaining the care of goods being delivered, good for maximising uptime of the vehicle, good for keeping the cost of repairs low and good for the profitability of operators; and we are honored to share the platform with MIROS at the upcoming SDC to promote this,” said Marketing and Communications Manager for Scania Southeast Asia, Ian Tan.

Much of what MIROS promotes can be seen during the SDC which is by far one of the toughest driving challenges that bus and truck drivers can experience. For example, drivers of vehicles that catch fire due to accidents are also taught to stick to simple steps that require the use of fire extinguishers while waiting for the fire brigade to arrive.

Its research has shown that applying logic to driving techniques, such as slowing down especially when taking a roundabout while carrying only a half-load due to the unbalanced weight distribution of the truck, is something that drivers must practice in order to be safer.

“All these good traits and acquired good habits produce a win-win-win situation and will be tested in this competition, reflecting MIROS’ objectives in maintaining safety on the road while Scania fleet operators can look forward to the development of a more professional stable of drivers with all round skills front-lining their businesses, benefiting them in the long-run,” stated Professor Dr Wong Shaw Voon, Director General of MIROS.

The Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore is set to continue Scania’s tradition of elevating the status of drivers and progressively addresses current requirements on road safety issues with a distinctive objective of helping to make the roads safer for all users in Malaysia and Singapore.

OVER 400 PARTICIPANTS TURN UP AT THE SCANIA DRIVER COMPETITION TO TEST THEIR TRUCK DRIVING SKILLS

Knocking the King test

Shah Alam, 19 June – An unexpected number of people turned up at the Scania Driver Competition–MIBTC Edition (SDC-ME) that was held in conjunction with the recent Malaysia International Bus, Truck and Components Expo 2015.

Held at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre, the competition was open to anyone who wanted to have a go at driving a truck and participants had the opportunity to drive Scania P410 prime movers - the staple of Scania - to test their maneuvering skills.

More than 400 participants, who came from as far as the East Coast, were put through a challenging test that required them to drive the powerful yet fuel-efficient trucks around the competition course to complete a series of control and maneuvering skills with the least mistakes possible.

For many of them it was the first time they had ever been inside the cabin of a truck, let alone drive one, which they did with the guidance of an official Scania Driver Trainer.

There were four top drivers selected for each of the three days of the competition and they each received a genuine Scania sports bag.

“I came to the MIBTC to source for supplies for my business, and after being encouraged by my friends I signed up as a contestant and just wanted to have some fun. I did not expect to win, but I’m sure glad I did,” said En.Ghazali Hussin who was one of the 12 top drivers.

“Though it seemed that the competition was all fun, I was impressed by the coaching that the Scania Driver Trainer gave me throughout the competition and realised how serious Scania is in promoting safety for their customers and their drivers,” added the business owner from Terengganu.

A husband and wife team who came to the exhibition just to participate in the competition said they found out after learning about it from an email they had received.

“When I found out that the competition was open to all truck drivers as well as driving license holders, I told my wife, to give it a go,” said En Zamri Abdul Rahman who works for a logistic company in Port Klang.

The SDC-ME was a successful prelude to the main event in October this year, which is the Scania Driver Competition 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore (SDC).

The closing date for submission of entry forms for the professional drivers’ competition is on 31 July, 2015.

“The fourth edition of the SDC is now open to all drivers of trucks and buses, besides Scania vehicle drivers, so it will be a bigger and more challenging environment this year, ” said Marketing and Communication Manager of Scania Southeast Asia, Ian Tan

Kuala Lumpur, 14th May 2015 –The second instalment of the Malaysia International Bus, Truck and Components Expo (MIBTC) kicks off today at the Malaysia International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC), with a strong showcase of over 80 local and international exhibitors and featuring a diverse range of fringe programs. The event with the theme ‘Drive Safe’ was launched by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar, Chairman of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Syed Hamid, Chairman of SPAD said, “Road safety continues to be a key concern for our nation and one which all parties involved in the commercial vehicle industry, from fleet manufacturers to drivers, must do their part in addressing this issue. Therefore, I am pleased to see the emphasis on this subject in the MIBTC event today and given the strong success of the first MIBTC, I am confident that this year’s show will be even more exciting and industry-relevant.”

In alignment with the event’s theme, the MIBTC 2015 sees many exhibitors such as Smart Lite, Volvo, Scania, and TUV showcasing products and services that contribute to better vehicle management and safer driving techniques. Other exhibitors have also put together a comprehensive display of innovative products and services that promotes safe driving. The Scania Drivers’ Competition – MIBTC edition, which is part of the Asian Trucker Drivers Club activities and is an obstacle course open to anyone with valid driving licenses, further augments the ‘Drive Safe’ message.

“We are pleased to be able to once again hold an event of this scale that brings together all parties from the commercial vehicle industry to showcase their best and exchange insights. Over the next three days, we are anticipating a total turnout of about 6,000 visitors to this expo. These attendees are all ambassadors for safe driving and we are grateful for their support of our ideas and efforts in championing safer roads,” said Stefan Pertz, Editor of the Asian Trucker and Asian Buses magazines and organizer of the MIBTC 2015.

He explained that prior to the MIBTC 2015, Asian Trucker had already been organizing a series of roundtable discussions as well as running Asian Trucker Driver’s club activities on the topic of road safety. The discussions which included sharing by industry leaders and government officials further reinforced the commercial vehicle industry’s commitment in coming together to address the issue of ensuring safer roads for users.

“Apart from a bigger display by returning exhibitors from the first expo, we are also seeing stronger participation from international brands in our event this year, including Brianza Plastica from Italy, Lamilux Composites from Germany and ALCOA Wheel Products Asia. With such a solid showcase from so many top brands from the commercial vehicle industry and some of them launching their new products at the expo, I am optimistic that visitors to this expo will be thoroughly engaged with new learnings and experiences, “Pertz added.

Visitors can also expect to take part in other exciting fringe programs such as the remote-controlled truck race and the Asian Trucker Networking Night. The networking night to be held on the second day of the MIBTC would see 800 local and global market leaders and players gathering to meet and exchange insights on new developments that will help increase the level of road safety in Malaysia.

Adding to the excitement is the Best Booth Design contest where awards will be given to the most creative booth design. The top two winners will be voted by MIBTC 2015 visitors and awarded with a total cash price of RM 20,000.
